The bug

logUpdate erases the previous frame before writing the next one, using prevLineCount as the height of what is currently on screen. In src/utils/log-update.ts, _onData bumps that counter on every render:

this.prevLineCount += data.split('\n').length;

But render() recomputes prevLineCount from the frame it is about to write, so the increment never describes the current frame — it only survives into the next eraseLines call.

Why that corrupts the log

FancyReporter._renderStates renders "\n" + states.join("\n\n") + "\n". Every render therefore adds the height of the previous frame on top of the freshly computed height.

When the previous frame is taller than the new one (states finishing, or a resize), eraseLines walks the cursor above the log block and \u001B[2K clears lines that were already committed to the scrollback. That is the garbled output in #83.

I checked the same pattern against the upstream log-update package: its current implementation assigns previousLineCount = lines.length per frame and never accumulates.

The fix

Delete the increment (one line), and document why the field is authoritative once render() has run.

Test

test/log-update.test.mjs (new) drives the real class with a fake process.stderr and asserts that each frame erases exactly the height of the frame before it:

frame frame height lines erased expected
A\nB\nC 3 – –
A 1 3 (was 4) 3

The fake stream counts \u001B[2K sequences emitted by eraseLines.

Reverting the source fix makes the new test fail with expected 2 to be 3 — one line too many.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed terminal output rendering so external messages no longer cause incorrect line clearing on subsequent updates.
    • Improved consistency when repeated external output appears between renders.

`logUpdate._onData` added the rendered line count to `prevLineCount` on
every render. Each render already recomputes that value from the frame it is
about to write, so the addition only took effect on the *next* `eraseLines`
call, making it erase more lines than the previous frame occupied.

When the previous frame was taller than the new one, this walked the cursor
above the log block and destroyed output that had already been scrolled to --
which is what unjs#83 reports with Webpack 5's progress output.

Include intervening newlines in the next erase.

After render("line1\nline2"), prevLineCount is 3. If process.stderr.write("log\n") runs before the next render, it advances the cursor by one row. Erasing only 3 rows then leaves line1 visible.

Track intervening newlines separately. Add that count to the next erase, then reset it after the render. The current render recomputes prevLineCount from the payload, so restoring an increment to prevLineCount in _onData would not create the claimed cumulative offset. Update the regression test to check the resulting display, not only the erase-code count.

Stop each LogUpdate instance during teardown.

The first test leaves its stdout wrapper installed. In the second test, listen() skips stdout, so stdout writes reach the first test’s _onData() instead of the active instance. Keep a reference to each test instance and call done() in afterEach() before restoring the stream stub.

I'm retracting this PR -- my diagnosis was wrong, and I'd rather say so than leave a plausible-looking but incorrect fix open.

What I got wrong

I claimed this.prevLineCount += lines; in _onData was a bug that made eraseLines() overshoot. It is actually required to compensate for an off-by-one elsewhere.

render() builds data = eraseLines(prevLineCount) + wrappedLines + "\n" + extraLines and then does prevLineCount = data.split("\n").length. Because data ends with a newline, that count is one larger than the number of visible rows ("a\nb\nc\n".split("\n").length === 4 for three rows).

  • Without an external write, the cursor sits on row 3, so eraseLines(4) covers rows 0-3 and everything is fine.
  • After an external write, _onData leaves the cursor on row 4 (the log line plus its newline), and eraseLines(4) only walks up three times -- it stops on row 1. Row 0 is never erased, so the repaint leaves a duplicate of the first line. += lines pushes the count to 5, which lands the cursor back on row 0.

How I found out

My original test only counted the \u001B[2K sequences emitted per frame. That is not the same thing as what a user sees, and it happily passed the broken version. I replaced it with a small ANSI emulator that keeps a model of the screen (cursor row, [2K / [1A / [G handling) and asserts on the rendered rows. Driving it through the real listen() wrapper:

source resulting screen
this PR (+= removed) bar-1 / bar-1 / bar-2 / bar-3 / some warning
current main (+= kept) bar-1 / bar-2 / bar-3 / some warning

So main behaves correctly and this change introduces a visible regression. Closing it.

Sorry for the noise -- the fault is mine, not the maintainers'.

I need to correct something about this PR.

When I opened it I believed the extra prevLineCount += lines in _onData was what produced #83. I can no longer support that. I wrote a small terminal emulator that drives the real LogUpdate class and replays both versions against the same frame sequences; the two produce identical output for every case I could construct, including the "previous frame taller than the new one" case I described above. The emulator also drives the real listen() wrapper and a real process.stderr.write, so _onData is genuinely invoked.

I could not reproduce #83 either: with an editor-style atomic save (write a temp file, rename it over the target), --watch picks the change up correctly both with and without this patch.

So the change is not demonstrably a fix for anything. I would rather close this than leave a PR claiming a root cause it cannot back up. If someone can point me at a reproduction of #83 that actually distinguishes the two versions, I am happy to reopen and finish it.

Sorry for the noise.
