The Installation section of the README only explains how to build from source. This adds a subsection on getting the compiler ready-built on Windows:

  • Chocolatey: choco install thrift
  • the .NET tool Apache.Thrift.Compiler from nuget.org
  • the installer thrift-<version>-setup.exe attached to the GitHub release
  • the plain thrift-<version>.exe from the download page

It also says where each one installs, which of them put thrift on the PATH, and that the compiler needs the Visual C++ Redistributable.

WinGet is not listed yet, because Apache.Thrift (microsoft/winget-pkgs#445370) is still waiting for a moderator. It follows in a separate draft PR, #4034.

For the redistributable, the README links Microsoft's "Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads" page rather than https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe: that link currently serves 14.44.35211, while the packages require 14.51 or later. #4036 (THRIFT-6441) replaces it where the installer and the .NET tool use it.

The .NET tool 0.25.0 targets .NET 8 without roll forward, so on a machine with only .NET 9 or later, thrift asks for .NET 8. The README tells readers to uninstall it and install it again with --allow-roll-forward: a second dotnet tool install only reports that the tool is already installed, and dotnet tool update does not take the option. From the next release on, the package rolls forward by itself: #4035 (THRIFT-6440).

Checked: all links resolve, and the GitHub markdown API renders the new heading inside Installation, before Package Managers. The reinstall sequence was tried in mcr.microsoft.com/dotnet/sdk:10.0.

  • Apache Jira ticket: none, documentation only
  • Single commit
  • Prose-only change: the commit subject and the PR title end with [skip ci].

The Installation section only covered building from source. A new
subsection lists the ready-built ways to get the compiler on Windows:
Chocolatey, the Apache.Thrift.Compiler .NET tool, the installer on the
GitHub release and the plain executable on the download page. It also
names the Visual C++ Redistributable the compiler needs, and what to do
when the .NET tool asks for .NET 8 although a newer .NET is installed.
