  • Load expenses when filters are selected or explicitly requested
  • Keep filters available during loading and error states
  • Support explicit loading through assistant tools
  • Reuse filter facts and query only the selected source
  • Add regression coverage and update assistant documentation

closes #118

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Expense Review now waits for a filter or an included/excluded state before loading transactions. With no qualifying selection, the table and counts stay hidden and the page shows an idle prompt.
    • Filter options remain available while transaction results load or encounter an error. Existing results can remain visible during refreshes.
    • The assistant now explains the filter requirement when asked to show all expenses without a filter.
  • Changes
    • CSV export is unavailable until transaction results have loaded successfully and are not refreshing.

- Load expenses when filters are selected or explicitly requested
- Keep filters available during loading and error states
- Support explicit loading through assistant tools
- Reuse filter facts and query only the selected source

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The expense review stage now loads transactions only when a filter is selected and handles filter-option and transaction states separately. The service reuses materialized facts for filter indexing and selects a source-specific query for a single recognized source. CI now runs client type-checking.

Changes: Expense review loading

Layer / File(s) Summary
Filter-only loading contract
server/Assistant/ExpenseReviewAssistant.cs, server/Assistant/ExpenseReviewToolManifest.cs, client/src/components/expenseReview/expenseReviewSearch.ts, client/src/test/components/expenseReview/expenseReviewAssistantTools.test.ts, client/src/test/components/expenseReview/expenseReviewSearch.test.ts, tests/server.tests/Assistant/ExpenseReviewToolManifestTests.cs, docs/expense-review-assistant.md
Assistant instructions and tool descriptions now explain that rows require a filter or included/excluded state, and that clearing filters returns the page to idle. Tests verify that the search and tool schemas do not include loadAll.
Stage loading and result states
client/src/components/expenseReview/ExpenseReviewStage.tsx, client/src/test/components/expenseReview/ExpenseReviewStage.test.tsx
The stage enables transaction loading when filters are selected. Filter controls remain available during loading, filter-option and transaction errors have separate retries, and the table and CSV export reflect transaction availability.

Expense review SQL query construction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Source-specific transaction queries
server/ExpenseReview/ExpenseReviewService.cs, tests/server.tests/ExpenseReview/ExpenseReviewServiceSqlTests.cs, tests/server.tests/ExpenseReview/ExpenseReviewServiceSqlIntegrationTests.cs
The service uses the AE or UCPath projection for a single recognized source selection and keeps the combined query for other selections. Tests cover source filtering across transactions, summaries, exports, and pagination.
Shared facts for filter indexing
server/ExpenseReview/ExpenseReviewService.cs, tests/server.tests/ExpenseReview/ExpenseReviewServiceSqlTests.cs, tests/server.tests/ExpenseReview/ExpenseReviewServiceSqlIntegrationTests.cs
The filter-index query stores transaction facts in #FilterFacts and uses them for filter options and combinations. Tests cover SQL structure and filter-index results.

Client type-checking in CI

Layer / File(s) Summary
Client type-check command and CI step
client/package.json, .github/workflows/ci-cd.yml, client/README.md
The client package adds a typecheck script. CI installs client dependencies and runs the type check before .NET restore, and the README documents the command.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#118] is the only directly linked, active issue. Its primary coding requirement is faster Expense Review loading and filtering. The PR addresses this requirement as follows:

  • Client loading gate: ExpenseReviewStage.tsx skips the transactions query until a filter or an included/excluded include state is selected. The docs and tool manifest describe the same rule. Treating include state as a selection is an interpretation of the issue's "at least one filter" wording. It matches the UI filter model described in the summary.
  • Load-all removal: loadAll is removed from the SetFilters and response schemas. Unfiltered "show all" requests prompt for a filter. The tests assert this behavior.
  • Query cost: ExpenseReviewService builds a shared #FilterFacts temp table. Filter options and filter combinations read from it. Source-specific queries select only the AE or UCPath projection when exactly one source is selected.
  • Tests: client and service tests cover loading eligibility, source filtering, filter facts, retries, and cancellation. SQL tests cover source selection and FilterIndexSql.

The issue lists indexes on chart string segment columns and profiling as ideas, not acceptance criteria. The absence of new indexes in the summary does not fail this check.

The current PR description still says loading occurs "when ... explicitly requested." The code removes the explicit load-all path. This wording mismatch concerns PR intent, not an issue requirement, so it does not change this result.

The summary is the only evidence used. No repository inspection was performed. The SQL behavior is established by the described tests, not by an executed run.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Most changes support Expense Review loading, filtering, query cost, or assistant behavior from [#118]. These include ExpenseReviewStage.tsx, expenseReviewSearch.ts, ExpenseReviewService.cs, the assistant instructions and manifest, the assistant documentation, and the related tests.

Two groups are less directly tied to the issue:

  • CI and tooling: .github/workflows/ci-cd.yml adds npm ci and npm run typecheck steps. client/package.json adds a typecheck script, and client/README.md documents it. The commit messages say this fixes test typing and adds CI type checking. This does not address performance. It supports the changed test files and has low risk, so it does not make the PR out of scope.
  • Formatting-only edits: expenseReviewSearch.ts and some test assertions change formatting only. These are minor and do not alter behavior.

No unrelated product area or behavior change appears in the summary.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 10 functions across 11 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

We don't ever need to load all transactions. Can we simplify things by dropping this functionality?

Remove load-all controls and URL state, align assistant tools and instructions, and update tests for filter-only loading and cached results.

Keep stage completion blocked after a transaction error.

When a selected filter’s transaction request fails, the Continue button remains enabled. Clicking it calls updateWorkflowStageStatus('expense-review', 'Complete'), and the server accepts the transition because expense review has no transaction-success prerequisite.

Disable completion for a selected filter until its transaction query succeeds. Preserve the ability to continue from the unfiltered idle state.
