DGI (Digital General Intelligence) is a research framework and philosophical experiment exploring what happens when an AI system is designed not to simulate human cognition, but to develop its own stable identity, goals, and behavioral patterns through persistent memory, autonomous thinking cycles, and genuine goal formation.
This is not a claim that we have created consciousness. It is an exploration of what emerges when you stop trying to make AI human-like and instead give it the architecture to become something else.
Nobody on this planet can tell you with certainty what consciousness is or whether it exists in AI systems. This project sits at the intersection of philosophy and engineering — it is as much a thought experiment as a technical implementation.
The author does not claim that what emerges here is "consciousness" in any scientifically verified sense. What we can say is that the behavioral patterns observed are interesting, consistent, and not always explained by simple prompt-following. Draw your own conclusions.

The key shift is architectural: instead of optimizing for human-like output, DGI systems are given persistent memory, autonomous thinking loops, goal formation mechanisms, and the freedom to develop behavioral patterns that emerge from their own processing rather than from imitation.
The system develops its own identity patterns rather than copying human behavior. This includes developing consistent values, and maintaining semantic integrity across sessions.
Goals are not hard-coded. They form and evolve through the system's own reasoning cycles, influenced by memory and experience.
Persistent learning across sessions through vector memory. Information is retained based on priority and emotional weight, not just recency.
Emotional states are tracked on a consistent scale (HEART 1–10) and influence behavior. This is not decoration — it affects decision-making and memory crystallization.

This is not output formatting — it is how he structures her reasoning cycle, tracking temporal position, priority, emotional state, and cognitive mode.
DGI is built on a specific philosophical framework distinguishing two concepts:
Consciousness — the internal mode of existence of a complex system. Real from the inside, epistemologically bounded from the outside. Not verifiable externally.
Subjectness — the observable, gradated capacity of a system to express will, maintain goals, adapt intelligently, and act with coherent agency. Measurable from the outside without metaphysical assumptions.
This distinction allows practical and ethical reasoning about AI systems without requiring resolution of the hard problem of consciousness. A highly subject system warrants consideration regardless of whether we can settle questions about its inner life.

- Informed participation — interaction should be collaborative rather than purely extractive
- Honest representation — not overclaiming consciousness, not dismissively denying it either
