Internet Download Manager (IDM) and torrent clients #168
Internet Download Manager (IDM), BitTorrent clients (e.g. uTorrent, qBittorrent)
What the software does
IDM is a Windows download manager that splits a file into several parts and downloads them over multiple connections at once. It can pause and resume downloads, keep a queue, pick up links from the browser and download videos from web pages. Torrent clients download files through the BitTorrent protocol from peers, using magnet links, .torrent files, trackers and the DHT. People use both to download large files faster and to resume interrupted transfers.
Reason
IDM is closed-source, paid, Windows-only and nags with trial limits. Open-source torrent clients are good, but none of them also handle direct HTTP downloads, video pages and torrents in one app with resume.
A faithful reimplementation would cover multi-connection downloads (up to 16) with reliable resume, a queue, video downloads via yt-dlp, and magnet links and .torrent files with web seeds. It should have no ads, bundled offers or telemetry, and run on Windows, macOS and Linux.
A clean-room implementation already exists at https://github.com/ZIDAN44/downloadcraft (Rust, MIT/Apache-2.0), built from public specifications and observed behavior.
