feat(mcp): validate tool-call arguments against advertised input schema - #1725
Conversation
openai_mcp_dispatch forwarded MCP tool-call arguments to the upstream server without checking them against the tool's advertised inputSchema. Validate the parsed arguments before any outbound tools/call so a schema violation returns an actionable tool error and dials zero outbound calls. The check is defense in depth and fails open: it skips validation when the schema cannot compile or would expand combinatorially past a work budget, builds the diagnostic from schema-derived content only (never instance values or dynamic keys), and fits the rejection within the per-call retained-byte reservation so the explanation is never discarded. Covered by unit, dispatch, functional integration, and OpenAI-client SDK tests. Closes praxis-proxy#1125 Signed-off-by: Sébastien Han <seb@redhat.com>

Address review of the input-schema validation: - Run the complexity estimate before `validator_for`, so a deep `$ref` chain can no longer overflow the stack during compilation. - Count `$ref` sibling keywords (evaluated under JSON Schema 2020-12) and percent-decode `$ref` fragments, so a bomb hidden beside a harmless reference or behind an encoded pointer can no longer bypass the budget; any reference the estimator cannot resolve is treated as over budget. Add deterministic work-estimate assertions and production-path adversarial regressions (allOf/anyOf/$ref-sibling/percent-encoded bombs), plus an isolated subprocess test proving a deep chain cannot crash the process. Adapt the tool-error test expectations to the structured mcp_call.error object emitted on the rebased base. Signed-off-by: Sébastien Han <seb@redhat.com>

Summary
openai_mcp_dispatchadvertised each MCP tool'sinputSchemato the model but forwarded the model's arguments to the upstream server unchecked. This validates the parsed arguments against that schema before any outboundtools/call, so a schema violation returns an actionable tool error and dials zero outbound calls. The check is defense in depth and fails open on a schema it cannot safely evaluate.Safety against an adversarial, client-selected schema: the depth-capped, memoized work estimate runs before compilation (so a deep
$refchain cannot overflow the stack invalidator_for), counts$refsiblings (evaluated under JSON Schema 2020-12) and percent-decodes$reffragments (so a bomb beside a harmless reference or behind an encoded pointer cannot bypass it), the diagnostic is built only from the schema path (never instance values or dynamic keys), and the rejection is fitted to the per-call retained-byte reservation.Related issue

None. Validation is always-on with no new config knob; conforming calls are unaffected, and the gateway fails open when a schema cannot be compiled or is too complex to evaluate.
