Summary

  • Generate a unique OpenAI-shaped completion ID when Vertex omits or sends a blank responseId.
  • Preserve a valid upstream responseId unchanged.
  • Keep one generated ID stable across all chunks of a streaming response.
  • Add unit, SDK, functional, and inference-fixture coverage.

Related issue

Closes #1543

Validation

  • Focused Vertex Gemini response unit tests
  • Inference fixture coverage and manifest validation
  • cargo +nightly fmt --all -- --check
  • Integration or functional tests — sandbox cannot bind the reserved local-port range
  • make lint

Checklist

  • I reviewed every changed line.
  • Generated inference fixture documentation is in sync.
  • The change avoids full-body buffering and unnecessary payload cloning.
  • Commits are signed by the human contributor.

Breaking changes

None.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Vertex Gemini responses without a usable upstream response ID now receive a generated completion ID with the chatcmpl-vertex- prefix.
    • All streaming chunks for the same response use a consistent ID, while separate responses receive distinct IDs—even if a later chunk includes an upstream ID.
    • Upstream IDs are preserved after trimming when they are nonblank and no longer than 256 bytes. Missing, blank, or oversized IDs are replaced with generated IDs.

📝 Walkthrough

Vertex Gemini translations now trim and validate upstream response IDs. When an ID is missing, blank, or longer than 256 bytes, the translation generates a random fallback ID. Each stream reuses its selected ID across chunks.

Changes: Vertex fallback completion IDs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fallback ID generation
apis/src/vertex/gemini/mod.rs, apis/src/vertex/gemini/response.rs
Fallback IDs use the chatcmpl-vertex- prefix and a random suffix. Finite responses retain trimmed, nonblank upstream IDs up to 256 bytes. Other IDs use a generated fallback, and generation errors propagate. Tests cover ID trimming, the size limit, and distinct generated IDs.
Streaming ID reuse
apis/src/vertex/gemini/response.rs
Streaming initializes a completion ID once and uses it for content chunks. Initialization errors propagate. A trailing usage chunk gets an ID only when usage was captured; if generation fails, the chunk is omitted. Tests cover stable IDs within a stream, distinct IDs across streams, and metadata arriving before content.
Integration coverage
tests/integration/fixtures/inference/*, tests/integration/sdk/openai/test_vertex_gemini_chat_completions.py, tests/integration/tests/suite/examples/vertex_gemini.rs, tests/utils/src/inference_fixture/coverage.rs
Fixtures and tests cover finite and streaming responses with missing response IDs. The coverage inventory adds the fallback-ID feature and scenario.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Low

Suggested reviewers: aslakknutsen

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d5f6e

No actionable merge-blocking risk is identified; merge after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 132dc

The change replaces a reused fallback identifier with random per-response identifiers while preserving one identifier throughout each stream. The reviewed changes introduce no material security concern or expanded access boundary.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed exposure is completion metadata delivered to Vertex Gemini clients. The reviewed production delta does not introduce a credential, authorization decision, persistent data-store operation, or cross-request identity registry.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Upstream response IDs enter as JSON strings, pass trimming and length checks, and leave through JSON serialization. Accepting provider-supplied identity predates this PR; the change bounds retained values and replaces the shared fallback rather than granting authority to an ID.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Randomness failure propagates without assigning a completion ID. Finite translation returns a generic server-error rejection. Streaming translation sets a sticky error, suppresses subsequent frames, and ends without a success sentinel; incomplete streams also cannot emit a successful termination.

one nit and then good to go:

apis/src/vertex/gemini/response.rs:162-163: streaming path no longer trims a whitespace-padded responseId before storing it.
