…#374) Add the inflight_tracker filter and its InFlightRegistry. On request start it increments a per-model in-flight count and sums the request's max_tokens/max_output_tokens into a per-model reservation. An RAII InFlightGuard parked in filter_state decrements both on Drop, so the counters are netted back out on every terminal path -- success, client abort, upstream error, timeout -- and can never leak upward. Lift the top-level JSON key scanner out of external_metering into a shared filters/src/json_scan.rs and extend it with u64_value so the token cap can be read alongside the model in a single pass. Registration, pipeline-extension install, example config, and the functional integration test follow in subsequent commits. Signed-off-by: Alexander Cristurean <acristur@redhat.com>
…praxis-proxy#374) Wire inflight_tracker into the AI filter registry and export the filter and InFlightRegistry from the crate. Install the registry as a pipeline extension unconditionally in install_pipeline_extensions so the filter finds its shared per-model counter table on every pipeline, and assert its registration in the registry test. Add examples/configs/inflight-tracking.yaml and trace logging in the registry so per-model increments and decrements are observable while the in-flight requests scorer that will consume the counters does not exist yet. Add a functional integration test for examples/configs/inflight-tracking.yaml (transparency: the filter proxies requests and leaves responses unchanged, tracked or not) and register it, satisfying lint-example-tests. Return the "inflight_tracker" name as a string literal so the filter-doc generator discovers it, and check in the generated docs/filters page and reference index. Extract register_request_metadata_filters so register_general_ai_filters stays under the clippy line limit, and make the module-doc reference to the private InFlightGuard a code span rather than an intra-doc link. Signed-off-by: Alexander Cristurean <acristur@redhat.com>
Apply nightly rustfmt to the filter and its integration test, and regenerate examples/README.md so the inflight-tracking entry is listed, satisfying the rustfmt check and sync-example-readme lint. Signed-off-by: Alexander Cristurean <acristur@redhat.com>

"unknown" as the model name used when neither configuration nor the request body
supplies one; remove the inaccurate metadata-key description.
Review comments at @filters/src/inflight/mod.rs:
- Around line 124-126: Update the empty-body path in on_request_body to register
bodyless requests through InFlightRegistry::on_request_start, including requests
that should use default_model. Preserve the existing body-based extraction and
tracking path for nonempty requests.
- Around line 105-107: Update InFlightTrackerFilter::request_body_mode and its
body-processing path so MAX_SCAN_BYTES limits inspection without imposing a
StreamBuffer request-size cap; ensure requests larger than the scan limit
continue to be forwarded without tracking rather than rejected with 413.
Review comments at @filters/src/inflight/registry.rs:
- Around line 64-65: Update on_request_start to enforce a configured cap on
distinct model keys in the registry; when a new model key would exceed the cap,
use default_model instead. Continue using existing keys normally, even when the
registry is at capacity.
Review comments at @filters/src/json_scan.rs:
- Around line 102-107: Update u64_value to reject numeric tokens whose first
character after the digit sequence is a decimal point or exponent marker, while
preserving parsing of valid integers. Correct the
u64_value_rejects_non_integer_values test to expect None for a fractional value.
Review comments at @tests/integration/tests/suite/examples/inflight_tracking.rs:
- Around line 28-84: Update both `example_config_inflight_tracking_passthrough`
and `example_config_inflight_tracking_untracked_request_passthrough` to use a
capturing backend and assert that each forwarded request body is unchanged, so
the tests verify the proxy path rather than only the response. If the in-process
proxy exposes the tracker registry, also assert the relevant registry counts; do
not assume registry access if it is unavailable.

examples::inflight_trackingto the feature-enabled integration test filter.Line 199 enables

The firstcargo testcall does not enable the feature, so the module is compiled out there. This duplicates the earlier review comment on this Makefile. The list is still unchanged.

InFlightRegistryacross the harness instead of creating a throwaway per listener.Line 153 builds a fresh
InFlightRegistryfor every listener pipeline. The registry is dropped after the build, so the test harness cannot read its counts. This also differs from the server, which keeps one registry across listeners and reloads. Tests that start the proxy withinflight_trackercannot assert counter state. Create one registry inbuild_pingora_server. Pass it intoresolve_listener_pipeline. Expose it onProxyGuardif tests need to read it.Based on learnings: the integration tests cannot assert registry counts because the registry has no HTTP surface. A harness-held handle would remove that limit.

I'm wondering whether core’s tracking can be extended and reused instead of re-inventing some of the logic and leave the ai impl has a fine adapter. I don't want to hold this, but ultimately we coud benefit from a better design. @shaneutt thoughts?
Small followups:
[MAJOR][Missing proof] Counter lifecycle lacks integration assertions. inflight_tracking.rs:6 checks forwarding only. Add assertions for live counts, token sums, cleanup after client abort, and preservation across reload.
[MINOR][Defect] Escaped JSON names are misattributed. scan.rs:271 records a/b as a different model from a/b; escaped field names are missed. Decode strings before matching or storing them. Independently reproduced; an existing comment covers this.
[MINOR][Defect] Split UTF-8 characters trigger unnecessary chunk copies. scan.rs:152 copies the entire next chunk to complete one character. Complete that character in a small buffer, then borrow the remainder.
… tests The filter_duration metrics test called resolve_pipelines with 5 args, missing the inflight_registry parameter added by this feature, breaking the lint-clippy build. Thread &empty_inflight_registry() through both call sites. Signed-off-by: Sébastien Han <seb@redhat.com>
Closes #374.
What this adds
A new
inflight_trackerfilter plus anInFlightRegistrythat tracks, per model:in_flight— requests currently openreserved_tokens— sum of each open request'smax_tokens/max_output_tokensOn request start the filter increments both; on completion it decrements both, floored at zero. The registry is a pipeline extension (same pattern as
ResponseStoreRegistry), so a future in-flight-requests scorer can read it viasnapshot().Design: decrement is driven by
Drop, not a response hookThe decrement runs from an
InFlightGuardparked inctx.filter_state, whoseDropfires when the per-request context is torn down. That happens on every terminal path — success, client abort, upstream error, timeout, h2 reset — several of which never reach the response-body hook. Keying the decrement offon_response_body(end_of_stream)would leak the counters upward on aborted streams; the RAII guard cannot. (This mirrors the crate's ownActiveRequestGuard/fd-admission pattern.)The filter buffers the request body (
StreamBuffer) and reads the top-levelmodel+ token cap in a single pass. A key nested insidemessagescontent is never surfaced, so a decoy there cannot misattribute the request.Shared JSON scanner
The top-level JSON key scanner was lifted out of
external_meteringinto a sharedfilters/src/json_scan.rsand extended withu64_valueso the token cap can be read alongside the model.external_meteringnow imports it; behavior unchanged.Tested
Unit tests for the registry, the Drop guard, and extraction; scanner tests moved alongside the scanner. Verified end-to-end against a live proxy: single/concurrent requests climb and drain correctly, per-model counters are independent, bodyless requests are skipped, and — the key case — an aborted client request still decrements via
Drop.Still TODO before marking ready
examples/configs/inflight-tracking.yamlcargo xtask generate-filter-docs)InFlightRegistrypipeline extension (idiomatic; a filter-based scorer reads it viasnapshot()). If the intended store is theKvStoreRegistry/ needs to be cross-replica, say so and I'll back the registry with a KV backend behind the same API.Summary by CodeRabbit
