It appears that node activity (a.k.a. workflow progress) animations are not very reliable. The problem may be related to some of the trace activity not making it all the way from the backend to the frontend.
I created this example diagram to help make the activity a bit more clear. As the diagram description says, if the activity trace is working correctly then you should see nodes and edges flashing consistently every 1 second, alternating between left and right, until the workflow terminates.
