Organize Yourself with Org-Mode

Due to the way Org works, TODO items, time-stamped items, and tagged headlines can be scattered throughout a file or even a number of files. To get an overview of open action items, or of events that are important for a particular date, this information must be collected, sorted and displayed in an organized way. - orgmode.org

Quick Introduction to used Tools

Emacs

An extensible, customizable, free/libre text editor — and more.

Org-Mode

Org-mode is a document editing, formatting, and organizing mode, designed for notes, planning, and authoring within Emacs.

Org-Agenda

The agenda view scans your .org files (set by customizing org-agenda-files variable) and collects all of the headings with a TODO (or related) keyword. … The agenda provides a convenient way of tracking your projects and managing your calendar.

Org-Drill

https://orgmode.org/worg/org-contrib/org-drill.html

Org-Drill is an extension for Org mode. Org-Drill uses a spaced repetition algorithm to conduct interactive “drill sessions”, using org files as sources of facts to be memorised. Each topic is treated as a “flash card”. The material to be remembered is presented to the student in random order. The student rates his or her recall of each item, and this information is used to schedule the item for later revision.

Org-Reveal

reveal.js is a tool for creating good-looking HTML presentations

Org-Reveal exports your Org documents to reveal.js presentations.

Org-Agenda

Comes pre-install but without any shortcuts (key bindings) set cause needs some configurations to set up.

Lets try it

Integrating google calendar

https://cestlaz.github.io/posts/using-emacs-26-gcal/

;; Syncing google calender with org-gcal package
;; This goes in to your configuration file

(setq package-check-signature nil)

(use-package org-gcal
:ensure t
:config
(setq org-gcal-client-id "<your_client_id>"
org-gcal-client-secret "<your_gcal_secret>"
org-gcal-file-alist '(("<your_email>" .  "~/lnu/emacs/gcal.org"))))

(add-hook 'org-agenda-mode-hook (lambda () (org-gcal-sync) ))

(add-hook 'org-capture-after-finalize-hook (lambda () (org-gcal-sync) ))

(defun org-current-is-todo ()
  (string= "TODO" (org-get-todo-state)))

;; Setting key bindings
(global-set-key "\C-ca" 'org-agenda)
(global-set-key "\C-cc" 'org-capture)

;; *Archiving done TODOs*
  (defun my-org-archive-done-tasks ()
  (interactive)
  (org-map-entries 'org-archive-subtree "/DONE" 'file))
  ;; Key is already in use
  ;;(global-set-key (kbd "C-c C-A") 'my-org-archive-done-tasks)

Org-Drill

Lets try it by creating a new org file

Org-Reveal

This presentation was written in org-mode -> exported to reveal.js Let’s check it out

Time to try it

everybody willing can install and try org-mode with spacemacs “emacs made simple”.

Installing Spacemacs

It’s just a set of packages and configurations added to Emacs. So you don’t have to spend weeks/months to configure.

A community-driven Emacs distribution The best editor is neither Emacs nor Vim, it’s Emacs and Vim!

On Linux

It is recommended to use your distro’s pkg manager. https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/download.html#gnu-linux

# 1. Install Emacs on Debian/Ubuntu (Linux)
$ apt install emacs
# 1. Install Emacs on Arch/Antergos (Linux)
$ pacman -Sy emacs
# 2. Install Spacemacs
$ git clone https://github.com/syl20bnr/spacemacs ~/.emacs.d

On MacOS (OS X)

Brew is lovely, have a sip.

# 1. Install Emacs
$ brew install emacs --with-cocoa
# 2. Install Spacemacs
$ git clone https://github.com/syl20bnr/spacemacs ~/.emacs.d

3b. https://www.spacemacs.org -> click “Download” -> open the zip file and extract the content in C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming.emacs.d\

Creating your first Org file

  1. Start Emacs (Spacemacs will start if properly installed)
  2. Ctrl+x Ctrl+f -> filename.org -> Enter
  3. Now you try out some things you’ve seen org-mode can do -> video
