WalkthroughThe change adds nonce validation to front-end AJAX handlers, limits password-reset requests by IP, validates matching reset passwords, removes reset email content from responses, and sanitises user-controlled values before output. ChangesAJAX security hardening
Priority: ➖ Normal — Schedule the authentication hardening because it protects front-end login and password-reset AJAX handlers with CSRF checks, rate limiting, and safer input handling. Removes data from the lsx_reset response that the front end never consumed and that should not have been exposed to the caller. assets/js/src/lsx-login.js reads only result.success and result.message, so nothing depended on it.
Hardens the three front-end AJAX handlers and the password reset template. - All three handlers now verify a nonce, passed through wp_localize_script and sent with each request. On failure they return 403 with a message asking the visitor to reload. - The reset handler is throttled per client IP via a transient. - do_ajax_reset_confirmed() now compares pass1 and pass2 server side; the check previously existed only in the front end. - templates/content-password-reset.php escapes its two hidden input values through sanitize_user / sanitize_text_field, wp_unslash and esc_attr. - class-lsx-login.php no longer interpolates a request value into a __() call, which both broke the translation lookup and skipped escaping. It is now a sprintf() with a placeholder and an escaped, sanitised argument. Note for cached sites: the nonce is rendered into the page, so a full page cache serving a login form older than the nonce lifetime will produce 403s until the page is regenerated. Exclude the login page from full page caching, or keep its TTL below the nonce tick.

In `@classes/class-lsx-login.php`:
- Line 378: Update the reset-rate tracking in the relevant reset flow around
set_transient so concurrent requests use an atomic shared-storage increment and
enforce the five-request limit without a read-then-write race. Preserve the
existing RESET_RATE_WINDOW expiry and per-IP key behavior, and ensure the
activation-key replacement and reset email occur only when the atomic count
remains within the allowed limit.
- Line 182: Update the unauthenticated AJAX nonce flow around self::NONCE_ACTION
to bind guest nonces to per-browser server-side state using the
nonce_user_logged_out filter, and ensure that state is established before guest
requests are validated. Preserve the existing nonce generation and
authenticated-user behavior.
In `@templates/content-password-reset.php`:
- Line 14: Update the hidden user_login field in the password-reset template to
preserve the raw login identifier and apply only output escaping, removing the
sanitize_user transformation. Add integration coverage for each supported login
format and verify the submitted login exactly matches the original user login
used by do_ajax_reset().

💡 Result:
In WordPress, logged-out users (guests) are assigned a user ID of 0, which means that by default, they share the same nonce generation context [1]. Consequently, guests are not uniquely protected against Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) attacks because the nonce generated for one guest is the same as the nonce generated for another guest in the same context [1]. To mitigate this, developers can use the nonce_user_logged_out filter [1]. This hook allows you to replace the default user ID value of 0 with a unique, session-based identifier for guests, ensuring that nonces for logged-out users become unique to their specific session rather than shared across all guests [1].

Bind the guest nonce to each browser.
WordPress assigns logged-out visitors the same nonce context by default. Use nonce_user_logged_out with per-browser server-side state before these unauthenticated AJAX handlers accept requests.

Reset login was being rewritten, not just escaped. sanitize_user in strict mode strips characters, and the value is posted back to check_password_reset_key(), which builds its lookup from the raw user_login. Logins containing stripped characters would no longer resolve, breaking the reset for those accounts. esc_attr alone is the correct control here: the context is an HTML attribute, and the key is verified server side regardless. Rate limit was not atomic. A read-modify-write on a transient lets concurrent requests all read the same count and each write count+1, so a burst could exceed the limit. With a persistent object cache the counter now uses wp_cache_add plus wp_cache_incr, which is atomic. Sites without one keep the transient path, which can still overshoot slightly on a burst but bounds sustained abuse; that limitation is noted in the code. Also corrected the comment above verify_ajax_nonce(). WordPress gives every logged-out visitor the same nonce context, so this is not a CSRF boundary for guests and the comment should not imply otherwise. What it does and does not buy is now stated plainly, with per-browser binding called out as a separate piece of design work.
