Records the design of contrib/windows-kernel: a kernel-mode static library built from the unmodified core on the WDK toolset, a self-test driver as its reference consumer, a build-only CI job, and the platform rules a consumer must follow. Grounded in a compile-and-link spike on x64 and ARM64 with the 22621 and 26100 kits. Signed-off-by: Jean Gautier <jeanga@hotmail.com>
The library targets Windows 7 on x64 by default, so one binary runs on every supported Windows; ARM64 starts at Windows 10. Below Windows 10 2004 the dependency header allocates through the kit's ExAllocatePoolUninitialized wrapper with POOL_NX_OPTIN, and the consumer's DriverEntry opts into NX pool at run time. Verified by building the target on the 22621 and 20348 kits. Signed-off-by: Jean Gautier <jeanga@hotmail.com>
The default build uses ExAllocatePool2 and asks nothing of the consumer's DriverEntry. Windows 7 stays the floor as a documented alternative build, selected with TargetVersion=Windows7 on x64 and built by CI on every run. Signed-off-by: Jean Gautier <jeanga@hotmail.com>
Verified by building: the x86 kernel-mode library and self-test compile and link for Windows 7 and Windows 10 targets, scalar under /arch:IA32, which /kernel alone does not imply. Kits newer than 22000 refuse the Win32 platform and any non-latest TargetVersion in their MSBuild targets while their compilers still build the code, so plan B (Windows 7 and x86) is built with the 22000 kit in a scheduled CI job; the pull-request job keeps x64 and ARM64 on the runner's 26100 kit. Signed-off-by: Jean Gautier <jeanga@hotmail.com>
Five tasks: the dependency header, property sheets and library project; the self-test driver and the image check script; plan B on the 22000 kit with its two expected failures; the README and doc pointers; the CI workflow. Every file is written out in full, with the build and check commands for the EWDKs on this machine. Signed-off-by: Jean Gautier <jeanga@hotmail.com>

- zxc_km.props carries the rules only: output directories and the staged include path move into the two projects, so a vendoring consumer can import the sheet without having its outputs redirected into this tree. - The self-test project forwards TargetVersion through its project reference, and the README says why: a project property does not cross a ProjectReference, so a plan B driver would otherwise link a library built for Windows 10 2004 and fail to load on Windows 7. - The self-test reports an allocation failure as STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES rather than STATUS_DATA_ERROR, including the library's own ZXC_ERROR_MEMORY. - Spec touched up where the implementation rightly diverged: two sheets, no sdkddkver.h, check-image.ps1 in the tree. Signed-off-by: Jean Gautier <jeanga@hotmail.com>
The windows-2025 image carries the WDK's Visual Studio extension but not the kit itself, so the first run stopped at the toolchain check. Both jobs now install their kit with Microsoft's installers (26100.6584 for the library job, SDK and WDK 22000.1 for plan B) and take MSBuild from the Visual Studio instance that has the WDK extension rather than the newest instance. Signed-off-by: Jean Gautier <jeanga@hotmail.com>
…al build The image carries Visual Studio 2022 and 2026, and vswhere picked 2026, whose MSBuild asks the 26100 kit for task assemblies it only ships for Visual Studio 2022 (MSB4062). The library job now pins the Visual Studio 2022 instance that has the WDK extension. The plan B job is dropped: the 22000 kit ships its MSBuild task assemblies for Visual Studio 2019 only, selected by $(VisualStudioVersion), so its targets cannot load on this image. Plan B is verified locally against the 22000 EWDK, the fallback the spec names, and the README says so. Signed-off-by: Jean Gautier <jeanga@hotmail.com>
…he toolchain is missing The Visual Studio 2022 instance with the WDK extension was not found on the runner, contrary to the image's published inventory. When the locate step fails it now lists every instance, which ones carry the WDK extension, and the kit's MSBuild task assemblies, so the next fix rests on facts. Signed-off-by: Jean Gautier <jeanga@hotmail.com>
The runner image carries Visual Studio 2026 only, with the WDK extension, and a kit's MSBuild task assemblies exist for one Visual Studio version: the 26100 kit's for 2022, the 28000 kit's for 2026. The job now installs the 28000 SDK and WDK with Microsoft's installers, pins the Visual Studio 2026 instance and builds with WindowsTargetPlatformVersion 10.0.28000.0. Verified against the 28000 EWDK (MSVC 14.50): x64 and ARM64 build with zero warnings and pass the image check. Signed-off-by: Jean Gautier <jeanga@hotmail.com>

- Drop plan B (Windows 7, Win32): Windows 10 2004 on x64 and ARM64 is the only target; zxc_deps.h refuses an older NTDDI_VERSION or another machine. - Rename the workflow to kernel-windows.yml. - Pin the SDK and WDK installers to versioned URLs and check their SHA-256 and Microsoft Authenticode signature before running them. - check-image.ps1: fail on a nonzero dumpbin exit code, and reject ymm/zmm registers (AVX) on every image. - README: CI uses the 28000 kit; plan B sections removed. - Replace the hand-made project GUIDs with generated ones. - selftest.c: static_assert spelling. - Remove the design spec and plan under docs/superpowers. Thanks for the updates! 2 small changes left (AVX check, secure boot note) and it's good to merge.
check-image.ps1 matched register names only, so vzeroupper and VEX instructions on xmm registers passed. On x64 it now also rejects any v mnemonic. The README notes that test signing needs Secure Boot off. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
