Restore artifact uploads and Slack success notifications for manually dispatched nightly builds from non-main branches, after all requested builds pass.

Branch builds publish to versioned S3 URLs and use those URLs in Slack and release notes, preventing them from overwriting the shared nightly/latest downloads.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Manual test runs from non-default branches can now publish versioned downloads and send Slack notifications when successful.
  • Changes
    • Test-run downloads use version-specific links rather than updating the shared “latest” link.
    • Temporary draft releases created by test runs are deleted after the run.

Walkthrough

The release workflow now permits eligible test runs to reach artifact uploads and successful-publication notification formatting. The scripts use version-specific links and skip shared nightly latest aliases for test runs. New tests check these behaviors and workflow conditions.

Changes: Nightly test-run publishing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Test-run release flow
.github/workflows/release.yml, scripts/ci/format.sh, scripts/ci/publish-to-s3.sh, scripts/ci/release_workflow_test.py
The workflow passes IS_TEST_RUN to upload and notification steps and no longer excludes test runs from eligible uploads or notification formatting. For nightly test runs, the scripts use version-specific links and do not update the shared latest alias. Tests cover artifact links, aliases, and workflow conditions.

Branch nightlies publish versioned downloads without replacing shared latest links. The change is mergeable; direct coverage of failed requested builds at the nightly gate remains a bounded follow-up.

Explanation

The title "ci: restore uploads and Slack notifications for branch nightlies" matches the main change. The PR restores artifact uploads and Slack success notifications for manually dispatched nightly builds from non-main branches. The raw summary confirms changes to release.yml upload jobs, the Slack formatting step, publish-to-s3.sh, format.sh, and a new test file that covers these behaviors. The title is concise, specific, and follows the conventional commit style.

Cover the nightly gate's build-result check.

The eligibility test sets nightly-gate.result directly. It does not run the Require every requested candidate to pass step in .github/workflows/release.yml, which contains the check_candidate logic. If that step stopped failing on a failed requested build, this test would still pass. The upload and notification jobs gate on needs.nightly-gate.result == 'success', so this step controls whether those jobs run.

Add a case that runs the gate step with the existing run_step helper. Set one requested build result to failure, and assert that the step fails. This adds coverage for current behavior. It does not indicate a current production defect.
