Have you ever wondered what makes it possible for [USAspending.gov](https://www.usaspending.gov) to compare government spending across more than a hundred agencies, thousands of programs, and millions of <GlossaryLink term="award" label="awards" />?

The answer starts with the [Governmentwide Spending Data Model (GSDM)](https://tfx.treasury.gov/data-transparency/gsdm).

## How the GSDM Works
Think of the GSDM as a common language for federal spending data. Just as a dictionary helps people communicate clearly or a sheet of music helps an orchestra play in harmony, the GSDM establishes standardized definitions, formats, and relationships for the hundreds of data elements used to report how federal dollars are spent.

The GSDM creates consistency among the data. This consistency helps ensure that spending data reported by federal agencies can be accurately collected, validated, and shared with the public through USAspending.

Originally [introduced in 2016](https://tfx.treasury.gov/system/files/2025-04/gsdm-overview-v1.0.pdf) as the DATA Act Information Model Schema (DAIMS), the model was renamed the Governmentwide Spending Data Model in 2023 to reflect its expanded role beyond the DATA Act. Today, it serves as an authoritative framework that guides agencies on what data to report, where the information comes from, and how it should be submitted to Treasury.

But standards don’t stay relevant on their own. That’s where the GSDM Working Group comes in.

## Stakeholder Collaboration
This community brings together experts from Treasury, federal agencies, and other stakeholder groups monthly to review proposed changes, discuss emerging reporting needs, and continuously improve the data model. Whether it’s incorporating new legislative changes, modernizing reporting requirements, or refining data definitions, the GSDM Working Group helps ensure the standards evolve alongside the federal government’s financial reporting needs.

## Improving Our Data
While the GSDM operates mostly behind the scenes, its impact is reflected in the data you explore every day. By improving data quality and consistency, the GSDM powers more reliable searches, clearer visualizations, and more meaningful insights on USAspending. It also makes it easier for researchers, journalists, policymakers, developers, and curious citizens to explore federal spending with greater confidence.

Transparency isn’t just about publishing data, it’s about making that data understandable, comparable, and trustworthy. Thanks to the GSDM and the collaboration of the Working Group, [USAspending.gov](https://www.usaspending.gov) continues to provide a clearer picture of how taxpayer dollars are spent.
