Android Thread Explorer — Visualize Threading Behavior on Android (Pre-Kotlin)
atx is an educational Android app that demonstrates how threading works in Java-based Android development. It allows users to spawn different types of threads with adjustable priorities and observe how they behave under various configurations. Originally built before Kotlin became the Android standard, this app is ideal for understanding classic Java threading on Android.
- 🚦 Adjustable Thread Priority: Use a SeekBar to modify thread priority in real time.
- 🧵 Thread Type Selection: Choose from three built-in thread behaviors:
SleepyThread: simulates I/O or blocking behaviorWorkyThread: performs simple computationNetworkyThread: simulates network access
- ✅ Thread Kick-Start Option: Toggle enhanced thread startup behavior via a checkbox.
- 🌛 Interactive UI: Easily control and visualize threading concepts through a simple interface.
- Learn how Java threads are managed on Android.
- Understand how priority affects thread scheduling.
- Observe thread execution behavior under simulated workloads.
- Great for classroom demos or self-study in classic Android dev environments.
- Java (pre-Kotlin Android)
- Android SDK (pre-AndroidX) using
android.support.v7.app.AppCompatActivity - ButterKnife for view binding and event handling
- Custom thread classes (
SleepyThread,WorkyThread,NetworkyThread) - Logcat output for thread lifecycle insights
- Android Studio (3.x+)
- Android SDK (API 23–28 recommended)
- Java 8
- Clone the repo:
git clone https://github.com/didiergarcia/atx.git cd atx - Open in Android Studio.
- Build and run on an emulator or device.
- Select a thread type (e.g., Sleepy).
- Adjust the thread priority via the slider.
- Toggle the "Use Thread Kick-Start" checkbox.
- Tap Start Thread to launch the selected thread.
- Observe Logcat for execution details.
(Insert UI screenshot here to showcase the thread control interface)
- Port to Kotlin + AndroidX
- Add coroutine-based threading for comparison
- Include thread performance metrics or visual indicators
