feat(consent): record SMS consent as an append-only ledger and refuse sends without a grant - #42
Conversation
Consent was two booleans on Customer that defaulted to "consented" and carried no evidence. It is now a ConsentEvent ledger: every grant and revocation with the phone, the method, when the customer acted and the evidence (the inbound text, or the recorder and what the customer said for VERBAL_AT_COUNTER and WRITTEN_FORM). Customer.smsConsent caches the ledger's answer, defaults to NONE, and is written only by recordConsentEvent in the event's transaction. Events are never updated or deleted, and customer deletion is restricted. - src/lib/consent.ts: consentState, describeConsent, and the keyword rule moved from phone.ts and widened to the FCC per se list (REVOKE, OPT OUT, OPTOUT, trailing punctuation); a fixed phrase list classifies possible stop requests for review without changing consent. - Migration backfills from the customers' own texts, keeps any opt-out the old flag held, then drops OptInEvent and the flags. CHECK constraints pair method to kind and require recorder and evidence for staff-recorded methods. - The webhook and the seed write events through the ledger; the badges, profile card, composer and AI brief read the new status; the send route refuses anything but GRANTED with 403 REVOKED or NO_CONSENT. - PRD and decision log for the consent plan; PR 1 of 5.

…gaps - An ordinary text racing a STOP could be recorded as texting first and outrank it. The webhook body moves to src/lib/inbound-text.ts, takes the customer's row lock before writing anything, reads the status under it and dates the text from the database clock under it, so classification and ledger order follow one serialisation (owner decision 4). - A demo reseed replayed the recreated texts over customers who already had a history, appending a grant newer than a recorded STOP. seedCustomerConsent now writes a customer's consent only while they have no history, checked under the ledger writer's lock. - The backfill broke same-millisecond ties by random event id. Texts are ordered by time, then by when the old webhook recorded the opt-in or opt-out each caused, then by id, and backfilled ids carry that order. - TRUNCATE bypassed the append-only row trigger. A statement trigger now refuses it, including a TRUNCATE cascading from Customer. Each fix has a database-backed regression test built from the review's reproduction, and each test fails without its fix.
The old webhook wrote a text and its OptInEvent in one transaction, so when two texts landed in the same millisecond both timestamps could tie, and the backfill fell back to message id - turning a customer whose final legacy flags said opted in into REVOKED. The customer's final flags now decide such a tie, putting the keyword that matches where they ended up last, before the id. The migration test covers exact ties in both columns with ids that disagree with the flags, in both directions, 20 customers per case.
…s PR introduced it. In `src/lib/consent.ts`, `everydayStopPattern` was built with `new RegExp` from two template literals joined with `+`. The production minifier in Next 16.2.4 folded that join wrongly and dropped the `)(?![A-Z0-9'])` that closes the everyday-phrase group. The result was an unterminated group, so the module threw `SyntaxError: Invalid regular expression` while `next build` was collecting page data (for `/api/messages/send` in CI and `/api/demo/reseed` locally). I reproduced it locally with `prisma generate` followed by `next build`: the same error, and the emitted chunk showed the regex missing that segment. There is no `pnpm-lock` or config change. The only rule at stake is that the compiled pattern must be exactly the source pattern. The fix writes the pattern as a single template literal and adds a short comment explaining why. The pattern string is the same as before, so matching behaviour does not change. I checked the other places that could hit this: this is the only `new RegExp` in `src/` built from concatenated templates, and the SQL `consent_classify_reply` is never bundled, so nothing else needs changing. After the fix, `next build` completes and the emitted chunk has the full regex, with `WILL NOT STOP)(?![A-Z0-9'])(?!...)` intact. `tsc --noEmit`, lint and the full `pnpm run test` suite all pass (680 of 680); no `TEST_DATABASE_URL` was set, but the pattern string is unchanged. No unit test was added: the bug is in production minification, which unit tests don't run, and CI's Build job already covers it. The Vercel check was failing on the same build error
… everyday STOP hide an opt-out
The focused classifier review found five defects, each reproduced in both
the webhook's TypeScript rule and the backfill's SQL twin:
- One normalisation step, identical in both: Unicode NFKC, invisible format
characters removed, an explicit set of line breaks (U+0085, U+2028,
U+2029) and spaces instead of runtime-specific \s, upper-casing, and every
quote, bracket, asterisk, dash, punctuation mark or emoji a separator. So
‹CANCEL›, [END], 「QUIT」 and S<ZWSP>TOP revoke, ‹START› grants, and
U+0085 around a keyword reads the same in both runtimes.
- An everyday STOP phrasing (stop by/in/at/over, won't/wont/will not stop)
lets a text through only when nothing else in the whole message could be
a stop request: no other review word or phrase and no contact-word stem
(text, txt, messag, msg, sms, call, contact, number) anywhere. The
within-three-words rule is gone.
- "stop at" joins the exemption ("can I stop at the shop at 3"); "stop at
once" is still a stop request, and a line break never joins a phrase.
Every report input is a shared case; every keyword is also checked inside
each quote and bracket family, padded with each space and line break, and
split by each invisible character. The SQL parity test runs over all of it.
Intent
Attend (the ctxconnect project, a dealership service inbox that sends SMS) gets a real consent record enforced in plain code before any text is sent. The owner decided: "Consent is a hard rule, not a judgment call: no recorded consent, outside quiet hours, or after a STOP reply means the send is blocked by plain code with no model involved." The plan is the Attend consent plan report and the owner's twelve answers, given one at a time on 2026-09-25 and 2026-09-26, are binding. Two answers differ from the plan's recommendations: quiet hours use the federal window only, 8am to 9pm in the recipient's local time with no Sunday rule, while a reply to a customer text received in the last 24 hours is allowed at any hour; and a business-initiated text needs a grant or an inbound customer text within the last 18 months.
This task is PR 1 of the plan's section 11: the consent ledger.
The owner's answers, in full:
1 quiet-hour policy: federal window only, 8am to 9pm recipient local time, no Sunday rule.
1b replies outside the window: a reply to a customer text received in the last 24 hours is allowed at any hour; only business-initiated texts are held to 8am-9pm.
2 recipient local time: Customer.timeZone, null meaning the dealership zone, editable on the customer card.
3 non-exact stop wording: exact keywords revoke; a fixed phrase list raises a HIGH review alert and blocks the thread until a person records the answer; the alert escalates rather than fades.
4 ordinary text after STOP: stays revoked; only START, UNSTOP (and YES per 8) or a staff-recorded grant restores it.
5 scope of consent: one implicit scope (conversational and informational about the customer's own business); "Attend sends no marketing" is written into the PRD as a non-goal; a PROMOTIONAL scope is reserved for a future design with its own written-consent method.
6 consent expiry for business-initiated texts: a business-initiated text needs a grant or an inbound customer text within the last 18 months (the federal established-business-relationship period); replies to a recent customer text are unaffected.
7 evidence retention: ConsentEvent is never deleted, onDelete Restrict from Customer, phone copied onto each event.
8 Twilio console: enable Advanced Opt-Out on the Messaging Service, customize STOP and HELP replies to name the dealership and its service phone, keep YES as an opt-in keyword but record it as a grant only from a REVOKED state; the owner does the console steps, walked through, before Attend PR 3 ships.
9 cached status column: cache smsConsent on Customer written in the event's transaction, with a database-backed test that the cache equals the ledger.
10 blocked-attempt audit content: AuditLog records reason, user, conversation, customer and the body length, not the body; the draft survives in the composer.
11 legal questions: build now; the three questions (ATDS status of human-pressed sends, Texas telephone-solicitation registration or exemption, whether Texas calling hours reach texts to mobiles) go to the dealership's lawyer before Attend is used with real customers. The window must stay a one-line setting.
12 staff-recorded consent: allow VERBAL_AT_COUNTER and WRITTEN_FORM with evidence and recorder required.
What the plan's PR 1 (the consent ledger) covers: an append-only ConsentEvent model replacing OptInEvent (customer with onDelete Restrict, phone copied in E.164, channel SMS, kind GRANTED or REVOKED, method, the evidencing inbound messageId, recordedByUserId, evidence text, occurredAt when the customer acted, createdAt, providerRef), with methods CUSTOMER_TEXTED_FIRST, KEYWORD_START, KEYWORD_STOP, STAFF_RECORDED_REQUEST, VERBAL_AT_COUNTER, WRITTEN_FORM, PROVIDER_BLOCK, STAFF_CORRECTION, BACKFILL_FIRST_INBOUND, BACKFILL_LEGACY_FLAG and SEED; no writer updates or deletes an event, a correction is a new event. Customer drops smsOptedIn, smsOptedOut, optedInAt, optedOutAt and gains smsConsent (NONE, GRANTED, REVOKED, default NONE so no row is consented by default) and smsConsentEventId naming the event it rests on. One SQL migration backfills from evidence Attend already holds: a grant from each customer's earliest inbound text, the existing opt-in and opt-out records, and a revocation for any customer the old flag marks opted out, then sets the cache and drops the old table and flags. src/lib/consent.ts, database-free, holds consentState (latest event by occurredAt then createdAt wins, empty is NONE) and describeConsent (the one description every badge and card shows), and the STOP and START keyword classification moved from phone.ts and widened: trimmed, upper-cased, trailing punctuation stripped, whole-message match against STOP, STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT, REVOKE, OPTOUT and OPT OUT; START and UNSTOP grant; a fixed phrase list marks a possible stop request for review rather than revoking. The seed writes consent events. The customers list, the thread header badge and the profile card read describeConsent; the AI brief's opt-out sanitiser reads the new status; the send route refuses unless smsConsent is GRANTED. The PRD content/prds/2026-09-24-a-text-goes-out-only-on-recorded-consent.md and decision log content/decisions/2026-09-24-consent-is-a-ledger-not-a-flag.md are created. The 18-month expiry is modelled in the ledger only as far as PR 1 needs; the send gate itself is PR 2. Out of scope: the send gate, quiet hours enforcement, and Twilio console work. Never touch the production database or Twilio.
PR 1 acceptance checks: given the seeded database, when the migration runs, every seeded customer who texted in is GRANTED with smsConsentEventId naming an event whose messageId is their first inbound message, Lena Ortiz is REVOKED naming the STOP message, and no seeded customer is NONE. Given a customer row inserted with no event, its status is NONE, the customers page shows "No consent on record" in red, and a send returns 403 with NO_CONSENT. tests/consent.test.ts pins the derivation: empty is NONE; latest occurredAt wins over createdAt; STOP then START is GRANTED; every ConsentMethod is classified as GRANTED-only, REVOKED-only or either. tests/consent-keywords.test.ts: "STOP", "stop", " Stop. ", "OPT OUT", "optout", "REVOKE" revoke; "unstop" and "start" grant; "stop please" is a review phrase, not a revocation; "yesterday" is nothing. The database-backed tests/consent-cache.test.ts: for every customer the cached status equals consentState over their events. Replaying docs/twilio-local-verification.md scenario 3, STOP and START each write exactly one ConsentEvent and a replay writes nothing.
What Changed
Consent is now a ledger instead of a flag. A new append-only
ConsentEventmodel replacesOptInEvent. src/lib/consent.ts, which has no database access. It holdsconsentState(the latest event byoccurredAt, thencreatedAt, wins; no events meansNONE) anddescribeConsent. It locks the customer row first and dates the text from the database clock while holding the lock, so a STOP and an ordinary text arriving together are recorded in a fixed order.Readers and the send route now use the new status.

Risk Assessment
✅ Low: Commit 618faaa does what the owner chose in option A and nothing more. It takes "STOP AT" and its ONCE carve-out out of both the JS and SQL everyday-phrase patterns, which stay identical. As a result, every "stop at" text now falls through to the STOP review word and is held for review. The PRD note and the shared parity cases were updated to match, and no seed text or other consumer depended on the removed exemption.
Testing
I ran the app with
next devagainst a throwaway Postgres 17 container. I migrated a base-commit seeded database through the new consent-ledger migration and checked the backfill against the acceptance criteria. I also ran the three targeted consent suites against a real database, with the SQL/TS parity suite running and all passing. As the service advisor and the GM I drove the send route for NONE, REVOKED and GRANTED customers, and took screenshots of the customers page, thread header and profile card. I replayed signed Twilio webhooks for scenario 3 and for adversarial stop wording, including the "stop at" change made in this run. I checked the database's append-only guards, the cache against the ledger, the demo reseed and a fresh new-code seed. Every live scenario passed. The unit-level derivation and keyword scenario is marked untested as a live scenario because it ran as test suites rather than through the running product. The screenshots are dark-mode captures of the real UI. Afterwards I removed the container, the dev server, .next, src/generated (which was not present at the start) and the temp files.Evidence: Legacy flags and OptInEvent rows before the migration
Evidence: Backfill result after the consent-ledger migration (each customer's grant cites their first inbound text, Lena REVOKED citing STOP, no customer at NONE, old table and columns dropped)
Evidence: Targeted consent suites run against a real database
Evidence: Customer inserted with no event reads NONE
Evidence: Send route responses: 403 NO_CONSENT, 403 REVOKED, and a GRANTED send getting past the consent check
Evidence: Twilio scenario 3: STOP and START each write one event, replays and the ordinary text write none
Evidence: Webhook adversarial wording ('stop at', punctuated STOP, smart quotes, ellipsis, YES/unstop/optout)
Evidence: Database refuses UPDATE, DELETE and TRUNCATE on events and deleting a customer; cache equals ledger for 20 of 20 customers
Evidence: Demo reseed over the modified database: 200, no events deleted, cache still consistent

src/lib/consent.ts:281- This finding is new in 3802539. It is not one of the declined won't-stop items. Before this commit "STOP AT" was not an everyday phrase, and the PRD said so: "'Stop at' is not on the list: 'stop at once' is a stop request". The commit adds it back and carves out only "at once". I ran the current classifier on these inputs, and each one returns NONE:(?! +ONCE)guard does not see past the comma)None of them contains a contact stem. For a customer at NONE,
inboundConsentEffectthen returns GRANTED/CUSTOMER_TEXTED_FIRST, so the stop request goes into the ledger as consent, with the text cited as evidence. Before this commit each of these was REVIEW.The test suite already treats "Stop\nAt this point it's harassment" as a stop request (tests/consent-reply-cases.ts:99). Only the line break protects it; the same sentence on one line now becomes consent.
Sites that must change together:
The owner chose this exemption, so the call is theirs. Options:
(a) Narrow STOP AT to a place or time that follows it. For example, do not pass over it when THIS, THAT, MY, YOUR or ONCE follows it, and treat a comma after AT as no match.
(b) Drop STOP AT again and accept that "stop at the shop" goes to review.
(c) Accept these as consent.
Whichever the owner picks, add "Please stop at this point" to the shared cases so the SQL/TS parity test covers it.
🔧 Fix applied.
