fix(inbox): leave a blank for a customer or dealership name Attend does not actually have - #34
Conversation
…es not actually have Two callers answered a template placeholder on the composer's behalf, so the blank that holds Send never appeared and the stand-in went out as if it were real. This is the shape #33 closed for the advisor's name; these are the two instances noted there. The thread page handed the composer the stored customer name, and for a number nobody has met that is the placeholder the inbound webhook invented. Picking a template on such a thread filled the box with "Hi Unknown 4821, ..." and left Send enabled. isUnnamedCustomer already knows a placeholder from a name; the page now consults it and passes null, so the composer renders "[customer name]" and holds Send until she types the name she was told. The settings read created the row it could not find, named after the demo dealership, so a dealership that had never chosen a name texted customers one anyway. The read is now a read: an absent row is reported with a null name, "{{dealershipName}}" becomes "[dealership name]", the settings form starts empty and required, and nothing needs the row to exist - the form upserts on save. Both values take the route `unit` and `advisorName` already take: null for a detail the thread does not have, and the one existing blank mechanism does the rest. TemplateContext and the composer props widen to allow it; fillTemplate and the Send guard are untouched. Verified in the running app: an inbound text from an unknown number, opened by the service advisor, fills "Appointment confirmation" as "Hi [customer name], ..." under a header still reading "Unknown 4821"; with the settings row deleted, "Holiday hours" reads "[dealership name] holiday hours are updated", the settings page renders with an empty required name field, and the row stays absent across page loads. tests/templates.test.ts pins both derivations the way it pins the advisor's, and asserts on the predicate the composer holds Send with rather than on the null alone. Clear legacy default rows before returning settings.
At Line 126, settings ?? unconfiguredDealershipSettings returns any existing id: "default" row unchanged. The previous helper created this row with "CTX MotoWorks" for unconfigured dealerships. Existing installations can therefore still fill {{dealershipName}} with the placeholder.
Add a migration or backfill that removes or marks rows created by the old defaulting path before relying on this lookup.

Intent
Close two callers that answer a template placeholder themselves and so silently disable the composer's blank-value guard.
The mechanism being protected: fillTemplate (src/lib/templates.ts) turns a value it cannot answer into a visible blank such as "[customer name]", and the composer (src/components/message-composer.tsx) refuses to send while a blank is present. A caller that supplies a default for a value it does not actually know defeats it: the value arrives filled, no blank appears, the guard never runs, and the customer receives the default as if it were real. PR #33 fixed exactly this shape for advisorName by passing null; these are the two instances noted during that PR.
Instance 1 (reaches a customer): src/components/inbox-view.tsx passed customerName={selectedConversation.customer.name} into MessageComposer. For a number nobody has met, that stored name is the webhook's invented placeholder "Unknown 4821" (placeholderCustomerName in src/lib/customer-identity.ts), so {{customerName}} filled with "Unknown 4821" and the advisor could send "Hi Unknown 4821" to a real person. Fix: derive customerName beside advisorName using the existing isUnnamedCustomer(name, phone) check and pass null while the customer still carries the placeholder. The thread header and queue keep showing "Unknown 4821" as the on-screen label; only the template value is null.
Instance 2: src/lib/data.ts getOrCreateDealershipSettings upserted a settings row with dealershipName "CTX MotoWorks" for a dealership that has none, so {{dealershipName}} filled with a name nobody configured. Fix: replace it with getDealershipSettings, a findUnique that returns the row or an explicit unconfigured shape whose dealershipName is null. Nothing needs the row to exist (no foreign keys; updateDealershipSettings in src/app/actions.ts upserts on save), verified in the running app: the settings page renders as admin with an empty required name field and the row stays absent across page loads. The settings page uses
?? ""for the form input default and?? "Not set"for the read-only label, matching how its sibling phone/URL fields already render. The one rule: pass null when the value is not genuinely known and let the existing blank mechanism run, matching how
unitandadvisorNamealready behave. Do NOT add a third default for a template value: no fallback string, no "Customer" placeholder, no conditional default on the template path. fillTemplate and the composer's guard logic are deliberately untouched; they are the single mechanism. The only edits to src/lib/templates.ts and the composer are type widenings (customerName and dealershipName become string | null in TemplateContext and MessageComposerProps) - the plumbing null needs; knownValue already handled null.Three
?? "..."expressions are deliberate and must stay: the settings form input (?? ""), the read-only settings label (?? "Not set"), and the composer's undelivered-reply notice ({customerName ?? "This customer"} never got your last reply.). These are staff-facing DISPLAY fallbacks that never enter a template and never reach a customer; they exist only because the prop is now honestly nullable, and none of them is a default for the template value. Do not flag them as new defaults or ask for their removal - removing them breaks rendering.Tests (tests/templates.test.ts): each instance has a behavioural test at the level the guard operates. An unnamed customer's thread must surface a blank for {{customerName}} and Send must be held; a dealership with no settings must do the same for {{dealershipName}}. The assertions use remainingBlanks(...).length > 0, the exact predicate the composer holds Send with, so they prove the protection rather than the plumbing. They follow the existing pattern in that file: the customerName derivation is read out of inbox-view.tsx and executed (same as the advisorName test from #33), and every JSX site handing customerName / dealershipName to the composer is pinned bare. A source scan pins that data.ts no longer upserts a settings row or writes a literal dealershipName.
Verified end to end in the running app before commit: an inbound text from an unknown number, opened by the service advisor, fills "Appointment confirmation" as "Hi [customer name], ..." under a header still reading "Unknown 4821" with Send held; with the settings row deleted, "Holiday hours" fills as "[dealership name] holiday hours are updated". Also added two local-driving notes to .claude/skills/verify/SKILL.md (the DEMO_USER_EMAIL account must exist in the DB or "View demo" bounces to /login?reason=inactive; a fresh inbound thread files under GENERAL so the service advisor 404s until it is handed to her department; how to sign a local twilio replay).
Scope: these two sites and their tests only. Do not sweep for further instances. A third instance exists and is deliberately NOT fixed here: src/lib/ai/brief-runner.ts line 204 defaults the AI brief's dealership name with
dealershipSettings?.dealershipName ?? "CTX MotoWorks"when no settings row exists - the same shape (a caller answering a value it does not know with the demo dealership's name), feeding the AI ops brief prompt rather than a customer text. It is filed as its own task, ctx-ai-brief-default-bypasses-blank-guard, and the PR body must name it as a follow-up with that description. Do not fix it in this run.PR body requirements: lead with the customer consequence (an advisor could send "Hi Unknown 4821" to a real person because the invented name arrived pre-filled and the blank guard never got the chance to hold the message); then the precedent (#33 fixed the same shape by passing null, and this follows it rather than adding a default beside the one that caused the original defect); explicitly defend the three display fallbacks as described above; state that the tests assert "so Send is held" at guard level; name the brief-runner.ts follow-up. Stop at green; do not merge the PR.
What Changed
An advisor could send "Hi Unknown 4821" to a real person. For a number nobody has met, the webhook stores the invented placeholder as the customer's name, and the inbox handed that straight to the composer as
customerName, so{{customerName}}arrived pre-filled, no[customer name]blank appeared, and the composer's blank guard never got the chance to hold the message.{{dealershipName}}had the same shape: reading settings upserted a row namedCTX MotoWorksfor a dealership that had never configured one. #33 fixed exactly this foradvisorNameby passingnulland letting the existing blank mechanism run; this follows that precedent rather than adding a default beside the one that caused the original defect.fillTemplateand the composer's guard logic are untouched.src/components/inbox-view.tsxderivescustomerNamebesideadvisorNameusing the existingisUnnamedCustomer(name, phone)check and passesnullwhile the customer still carries the placeholder. The thread header and queue keep showing "Unknown 4821" as the on-screen label; only the template value is null.src/lib/data.tsreplacesgetOrCreateDealershipSettings(an upsert that wrote the demo name) withgetDealershipSettings, afindUniquethat returns the row or an explicit unconfigured shape whosedealershipNameis null. Nothing needs the row to exist: there are no foreign keys, and the settings form upserts on save.customerNameanddealershipNamebecomestring | nullinTemplateContextandMessageComposerProps, which is the only edit totemplates.tsand the composer beyond one display fallback.tests/templates.test.tsadds guard-level tests for both instances: an unnamed customer's thread and a dealership with no settings row each surface a blank and Send is held, asserted withremainingBlanks(...).length > 0, the exact predicate the composer holds Send with. ThecustomerNamederivation is read out ofinbox-view.tsxand executed, every JSX site handing either prop to the composer is pinned bare, and a source scan pins thatdata.tsno longer upserts a settings row or writes a literal dealership name. The verify skill gains two local-driving notes (theDEMO_USER_EMAILaccount must exist in the DB, and a fresh inbound thread files underGENERALuntil handed to the advisor's department, plus how to sign a local Twilio replay), and the PRD and shared-rules docs record the nullable names.Three
?? "..."expressions are deliberate and stay: the settings form input (?? ""), the read-only settings label (?? "Not set", matching how the sibling phone and URL fields already render), and the composer's undelivered-reply notice ({customerName ?? "This customer"} never got your last reply.). These are staff-facing display fallbacks that never enter a template and never reach a customer. They exist only because the prop is now honestly nullable, and none of them is a default for the template value.Verified end to end in the running app (see the Test section below): an inbound text from an unknown number, opened by the service advisor, fills "Appointment confirmation" as "Hi [customer name], ..." under a header still reading "Unknown 4821" with Send held; with the settings row deleted, "Holiday hours" fills as "[dealership name] holiday hours are updated". The admin settings page renders an empty required name field and the row stays absent across loads.
Follow-up, deliberately not fixed here:
src/lib/ai/brief-runner.tsline 204 defaults the AI brief's dealership name withdealershipSettings?.dealershipName ?? "CTX MotoWorks"when no settings row exists. It is the same shape (a caller answering a value it does not know with the demo dealership's name), feeding the AI ops brief prompt rather than a customer text. Filed as its own task, ctx-ai-brief-default-bypasses-blank-guard.Risk Assessment
✅ Low: Both callers now pass null exactly as the intent requires, fillTemplate and the composer guard are unchanged apart from type widenings, the only two consumers of the settings shape (inbox-view and the settings page) handle null, no other code fills templates or reads dealershipName, brief-runner.ts is left alone as instructed, and the new tests exercise the guard predicate and pin the derivation and JSX sites the same way the #33 tests do.
Testing
Ran the targeted templates test file (green on the target, and confirmed the four new tests go red against the base-commit sources), then drove the real app with a seeded Postgres and headless Chrome: a signed inbound text from an unknown number produced an "Unknown 4821" thread on which the service advisor's "Appointment confirmation" fills "Hi [customer name], ..." with Send disabled, and with the settings row deleted "Holiday hours" fills "[dealership name]" with Send disabled while the row stays absent across admin and manager settings loads. Screenshots and a state transcript are in the evidence directory; no product failures found.
