Intent

Fix a live timezone defect in Attend's follow-up create path, found by the Tier 3 rebuild (ctx-tier3-missing-basics) on 2026-08-31.

The defect: the reschedule path that Tier 3 rebuilt writes due dates correctly - proved with the server in UTC and the browser in America/Chicago - but the EXISTING createTask writer did not, and the two sat next to each other in the same product. Tier 3 deliberately left createTask alone and named it a non-goal in its PRD (content/prds/2026-08-31-move-a-follow-up-when-the-plan-moves.md). A follow-up created by an advisor could land on the wrong day.

Required: reproduce the way the Tier 3 verification did (dev server TZ=UTC, browser America/Chicago), THEN fix createTask to match the writer that is now correct (rescheduleTask), THEN cover it with a regression test. Reference commits are for understanding only - rebuild on current main, do not cherry-pick.

Acceptance criteria set by the user: works end to end, exercised the way the real service advisor hits it, not just asserted in a unit test; the reproduction comes first and becomes the regression test; nothing outside this defect changes - anything else found broken is REPORTED, not fixed; lint, typecheck, tests and build all green. Follow the repo's conventions and AGENTS.md.

REPRODUCED before any code changed: with TZ=UTC and Chrome in America/Chicago, creating a follow-up due 2026-09-01 00:30 on her clock posted the picker's bare "2026-09-01T00:30"; createTask ran new Date() on it where the server stood and stored 2026-09-01T00:30Z; Attend showed it back as due 2026-08-31 19:30 - five hours early, the wrong day. Confirmed in Postgres and in the UI.

This run is a re-run: the previous run (01M1BKPNAB15C0V54QEQK7K6GH) was killed overnight mid-fix-round and its review fix commit is preserved in the branch. Custody was recovered with the supported axi sync --recover. Do not re-litigate decisions already made below.

DESIGN DECISIONS AND TRADEOFFS a reviewer reading only the diff would not know:

  1. A SECOND half of the same defect was found during reproduction and fixed in the same pass: the default date the create form offered was computed during the SERVER render, so defaultFollowUpDueDate reasoned about the server's working day. From Pacific/Auckland - her evening is the server's tomorrow - the form offered 17:00 on a day already over instead of 09:00 the next morning. Same bug, same field, same cause. In scope deliberately.

  2. The picker deliberately carries NO name attribute. What is posted is a hidden dueAt holding the instant, so no bare wall clock exists in the form data for any writer to pick up.

  3. createTask THROWS on a missing or bare-local due date rather than following its existing silent-return style for other missing fields. Matches rescheduleTask deliberately, and matches the verify skill's documented expectation that a regression surfaces as the action erroring rather than as a wrong hour.

  4. The server render leaves the date field EMPTY rather than rendering a server-derived default, following the LocalTimestamp placeholder pattern. Accepted consequence: a brief empty field before hydration, and an un-hydrated page cannot submit because the field is required. Failing closed beats rendering a date the server invented.

  5. The draft is dropped on the useFormStatus pending transition so the due date resets with the uncontrolled fields React resets, preserving the form's existing reset behaviour.

  6. DECIDED, do not revisit: follow-up rows already written against the server's clock are NOT migrated. That would need a per-row timezone never recorded, and the advisor can move any one of them in a press. Named in the PRD non-goals.

  7. DECIDED, do not revisit: the Tier 3 reschedule PRD was left exactly as written, because dated records in content/prds keep what they were written with. A new PRD (content/prds/2026-08-31-a-new-follow-up-lands-on-the-day-she-picked.md) documents this change and is in the PRD index.

  8. DECIDED, do not revisit - Command Center (src/lib/data.ts, getCommandCenterFocusItems, due ${task.dueDate.toLocaleString()} in the server render) still prints a due date in the server's timezone. This is a DISPLAY defect; the one being fixed here is a STORAGE defect. Same symptom, different cause, different fix. The owner filed it as separate work and ruled REPORT, DO NOT FIX. src/lib/data.ts must NOT be changed. What was required instead - and is done - is that the PRD's acceptance criteria and Risks section state plainly which surfaces are correct after this change (the thread's open-follow-up card and the Tasks page, both timezone-independent via formatDistanceToNow, and the reschedule picker) and which is not (Command Center's focus items). The PR body must say the same.

  9. DECIDED, do not revisit - an out-of-range or unconvertible picker value must be refused in the box rather than reaching the thrown server action as a full error page. The blocking mechanism is constraint validation (setCustomValidity) plus an inline message, NOT an early return: this component is a field inside someone else's and owns no submission to abandon, so an inline message alone would be a no-op. Verified in a real browser.

  10. DECIDED, do not revisit - the "unreadable" predicate asks instantFromZonedIso, the server's own reader, about the exact string about to be posted, so the box refuses precisely what the write refuses. A max attribute was proposed and REJECTED on measurement: a value equal to max is not a rangeOverflow, so 9999-12-31T23:59 - which converts to +010000-01-01T05:59:00.000Z west of UTC and is refused by ZONED_INSTANT - walks straight through it. A constant chosen to clear the worst offset would encode a timezone assumption inside the code that exists to stop timezone assumptions. Do not reintroduce max, and do not change ZONED_INSTANT or createTask's throw.

  11. src/components/reschedule-follow-up.tsx has the same year-overflow gap but degrades to its own inline "That did not save" catch rather than an error page. Pre-existing and OUT OF SCOPE - report only, do not change it.

  12. The regression test tests/follow-up-write-shape.test.ts is partly a source-shape textual guard, deliberately, following the tests/notification-write-shape.test.ts precedent, because this repo has no database-backed tests. It pins that a datetime-local picker may only be rendered where the timezone is known, and that a server action may only accept a due date naming its offset; both were verified to FAIL when either half of the fix is reverted. It also replays the reproduction and the year-10000 overflow.

  13. AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md and .claude/skills/verify/SKILL.md were updated because they asserted as current fact that createTask still read a bare local string. AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md are kept in sync as the repo requires.

VERIFIED end to end on this head, server TZ=UTC, Chrome America/Chicago: the 00:30 pick posts 2026-09-01T05:30:00.000Z, stores 2026-09-01T05:30Z and reads back as 2026-09-01 00:30; Pacific/Auckland gets 2026-09-01T09:00; the form resets after submit; the no-JS server pass renders an empty required field and empty hidden dueAt; overflow picks 9999-12-31 23:59 and 18:00 are marked invalid with the reason on screen and no row written and no error page, while 17:59 still posts 9999-12-31T23:59:00.000Z; an ordinary pick is untouched; rescheduling still writes correctly. eslint clean, tsc --noEmit clean, 397 tests pass, next build compiled successfully.

Nothing else was found broken beyond the Command Center display defect reported above.

What Changed

  • createTask now reads a hidden dueAt instant through instantFromZonedIso and throws on a missing or bare local value, matching rescheduleTask; previously it ran new Date() on the picker's bare 2026-09-01T00:30 wherever the server stood, so a follow-up an advisor in America/Chicago set for half past midnight was stored as 2026-09-01T00:30Z and read back as due 19:30 the evening before. The thread's due field moved into a new client component src/components/follow-up-due-date.tsx, which computes the default in the browser too (the server-rendered default offered a time on a day already over from Pacific/Auckland), carries no name so no wall clock exists in the form data, and marks a value the date reader will not convert invalid in the box with the reason on screen instead of letting it reach the thrown action as an error page. The server pass renders an empty required field rather than a date the server invented. ui/field.tsx's Input was widened to forward a ref.
  • Added tests/follow-up-write-shape.test.ts, which replays the reproduction (a America/Chicago pick with the server in UTC), the year-10000 overflow, and the bare-local value that caused the wrong day, plus source-shape guards following the notification-write-shape precedent: no datetime-local picker may be rendered where the timezone is unknown, no due date may be posted under a name of its own, and every server action reading a due date must send it through the instant reader. Documented in a new PRD (content/prds/2026-08-31-a-new-follow-up-lands-on-the-day-she-picked.md) with an index row, and corrected AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md and .claude/skills/verify/SKILL.md, which all still asserted as current fact that createTask read a bare local string.
  • Reported, not fixed, and stated here because this change unmasks it: Command Center still reasons about due dates on the server's clock in three places, and all three move. getCommandCenterFocusItems prints task.dueDate.toLocaleString() in the server render, the "due today" bucket uses endOfDay(now) in the server's zone (src/lib/data.ts), and syncOperationalNotifications sweeps FOLLOW_UP_DUE against the same boundary (src/lib/notifications.ts). Two errors were cancelling: with the write now correct, an evening pick west of the server buckets, alerts and prints a day later than it did. That is a display defect with its own fix and is tracked as separate work; src/lib/data.ts is untouched. The surfaces that are correct after this change are the thread's open-follow-up card and the Tasks page (both timezone-independent via formatDistanceToNow) and the reschedule picker.

Follow-up rows already written against the server's clock are not migrated; that would need a per-row timezone the product never recorded, and the advisor can move any one of them in a press.

Risk Assessment

⚠️ Medium: The source is unchanged from the previously reviewed head and this round only completes the PRD's report of the unmasked Command Center behaviour, but merging still moves three Command Center surfaces - the printed date, "due today" bucketing and the FOLLOW_UP_DUE sweep - for evening picks until the separately-filed Command Center work lands, which is authorized, documented, and a real follow-up.

Testing

Set up the local stack the verify skill describes (plain Postgres, seed without AI briefs, dev server pinned to TZ=UTC) and drove the real advisor flow in a headless Chrome standing in America/Chicago. I reproduced the defect first against the base code restored into the running server - the 00:30 pick posted a bare wall clock and Attend showed it as 7:30 PM the day before - then restored HEAD and showed the same pick now posting 2026-09-01T05:30:00.000Z, storing that instant, and reading back as 12:30 AM on 1 September, with both rows compared in Postgres. Also exercised the second half of the defect from Pacific/Auckland (form offers her 17:00 where the server would have offered 09:00), the out-of-range refusal in the box with no row written and no error page, the no-JS server render that fails closed, and the reschedule writer still storing correctly. The new regression test was mutation-checked: it fails when either the server writer or the client picker is reverted. Targeted unit runs (follow-up tests plus the other source-scanning tests that could see the new component) are all green, and the working tree was left clean. Command Center's focus list still prints the due date on the server's clock - verified, and it is the display defect the change deliberately reports rather than fixes.

  • Evidence: Before the fix: the follow-up she set for 12:30 AM on 1 Sept, read back as 7:30 PM on 31 Aug (base code, server UTC, browser Chicago) (local file: /var/folders/pr/m0w1fnts5tjbg64d_spbb53c0000gn/T/no-mistakes-evidence/01M1CN3EV83XBFM4N4PRZ3EWX4/07-before-fix-read-back-wrong-day.png)

## 1. The defect, reproduced against the base code (ca814e6 restored into the
running server, then restored to HEAD)

    pre-fix form:   {"name":"dueDate","value":"2026-09-01T09:00","hidden":"(no hidden dueAt field)"}
    picked: {"picker":"2026-09-01T00:30","posted":"2026-09-01T00:30"} <- bare wall clock
    read back:      {"raw":"2026-08-31T19:30","human":"Monday, August 31, 2026 at 7:30 PM"}

## 2. The same pick on this head

    default offered by the form: {"picker":"2026-09-01T09:00","hidden":"2026-09-01T14:00:00.000Z"}
    filled in:  {"picker":"2026-09-01T00:30","hidden":"2026-09-01T05:30:00.000Z","pickerHasName":""}
    after submit: {"hasTitle":true,"isErrorPage":false,"picker":"2026-09-01T09:00","title":""} <- form reset
    read back:  {"raw":"2026-09-01T00:30","human":"Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 12:30 AM"}

## 3. Both rows, side by side in Postgres

                       title                      |       stored_utc        |  advisor_sees_chicago

## 4. The default, from a zone where the server's working day has already ended

    browser now (Pacific/Auckland): Tue Sep 01 2026 08:09:41 GMT+1200
    form offers: 2026-09-01T17:00 (her closing time today)
    the server in UTC would offer: 2026-09-01T09:00
    her pick 2026-09-02T08:00  ->  stored 2026-09-01 20:00Z  =  2026-09-02 08:00 Auckland

## 5. A date the write cannot read is refused in the box

    9999-12-31T23:59 -> dueAt "+010000-01-01T05:59:00.000Z" valid:false "That is not a date Attend can read. Pick it again."

    2026-09-04T16:45 -> dueAt "2026-09-04T21:45:00.000Z"     valid:true   (the skill's 16:45 -> 21:45Z case)

    pressing "Add follow-up" on the overflow:
    {"stillOnThread":true,"errorPage":false,"titleStillTyped":"...","cardWritten":false}
    SELECT count(*) FROM "Task" WHERE title LIKE 'Overflow guard probe%'; -> 0

## 6. The server (no-JS) render fails closed

    <input ... id="follow-up-due-date" type="datetime-local" required="" value=""/>

    No `name` on the picker, no server-invented default, nothing submittable.

## 7. Reschedule still writes correctly after the change

    moved to 2026-09-03T07:15 (Chicago) -> stored 2026-09-03 12:15:00 UTC -> card reads "Due in 3 days"

## 8. Reported, not fixed: Command Center prints the server's clock

    /command-center?focus=overdue, browser at 15:14 CDT, server in UTC:
    "Service · Alyssa Torres · due 8/31/2026, 3:00:02 PM"
    "Service · Alyssa Torres · due 8/31/2026, 5:00:02 PM"

    The Tasks page and the thread card are timezone-independent:
    "Nina Caldwell · Service · due in about 9 hours"

  • ⚠️ src/lib/data.ts:394 - Correcting the stored instant also changes which follow-ups count as "due today", and the PRD's Risks section reports only the rendered string, not this. Command Center buckets with dueDate: { gte: now, lte: todayEnd } where todayEnd = endOfDay(now) (src/lib/data.ts:602) runs in the server's zone, and syncOperationalNotifications does the same with todayEnd.setHours(23,59,59,999) (src/lib/notifications.ts:254-255, 278). Before this change the two errors cancelled: an advisor in America/Chicago picking 1 Sep 20:00 posted the bare "2026-09-01T20:00", createTask read it in UTC and stored 2026-09-01T20:00Z, which is inside UTC's 1 September, so it appeared under "Follow-ups due today" and raised a FOLLOW_UP_DUE alert that day. With the instant now correct it stores 2026-09-02T01:00Z, falls past endOfDay in UTC, and shows up as due tomorrow instead - a visible regression on that surface for any evening pick. The reverse case improves: overdue (dueDate < now, src/lib/data.ts:395 and src/app/(app)/tasks/page.tsx:34) is a plain instant comparison and is now right where it previously flagged a 08:00 Chicago follow-up overdue at 04:00 on her clock. This is the same family as the display defect the owner ruled REPORT, DO NOT FIX, and src/lib/data.ts is correctly untouched - the ask is only whether the reported follow-up work should cover day-bucketing and the alert sweep, not just the toLocaleString() meta line, since the intent states "Nothing else was found broken beyond the Command Center display defect reported above."
  • ℹ️ tests/follow-up-write-shape.test.ts:155 - The guard is scoped to every "use server" file rather than to files that read a due date, so unrelated future work trips it. Line 153 collects all files containing "use server", line 155 asserts that set equals exactly [src/app/actions.ts], and line 163 then asserts each such file contains exactly ['formData.get("dueAt")', 'formData.get("dueAt")']. Splitting admin or settings actions into src/app/admin-actions.ts - which has nothing to do with follow-ups - fails both assertions, the second with the misleading message that a file "reads a due date without demanding an offset" when it reads no due date at all. The invariant the intent names ("a server action may only accept a due date naming its offset") is fully carried by the per-line instantFromZonedIso check in the loop at lines 158-169, which already covers any new server-action file. Filtering to files that actually match formData.get("due - the way tests/notification-write-shape.test.ts filters to files that call notification.create before pinning the list - keeps the guard and drops the tripwire.

🔧 Fix: scope due-date guard to due-date actions, widen PRD risks
1 info still open:

  • ℹ️ content/prds/2026-08-31-a-new-follow-up-lands-on-the-day-she-picked.md:119 - The widened Risks entry undercounts the surfaces this change visibly alters: it says Command Center reads a due date on the server's clock "in three places, and this change changes what two of them do", but all three change. The rendered meta line was accidentally correct before the fix. Advisor in America/Chicago picks 1 September 20:00; the old bare-string write stored 2026-09-01T20:00Z, and task.dueDate.toLocaleString() on a UTC server renders that as "9/1/2026, 8:00:00 PM" - exactly the wall clock she picked. The corrected instant 2026-09-02T01:00Z renders as "9/2/2026, 1:00:00 AM" (both confirmed by running toLocaleString() under TZ=UTC). So the printed string flipped from accidentally-right to wrong for the same reason bucketing did, yet the "The rendered meta line" sub-bullet at lines 124-131 describes only the post-change state and the unmasking paragraph at lines 140-150 covers bucketing and the sweep alone. The Summary paragraph at lines 20-23 has the same gap - it says correcting the instant "changes which follow-ups it counts as due today and alerts on" without mentioning the printed date. This is the class of under-reporting the owner's instruction 4 targets ("Correct any line in the PRD that under-reports this"); the fix is to say three rather than two and add the before/after render to the meta-line bullet. Flagging rather than editing because the owner wrote this paragraph's structure and narrative explicitly, and the same statement is owed in the PR body.

🔧 Fix: report all three Command Center surfaces this change unmasks

  • Pre-fix reproduction: base src/app/actions.ts + src/components/inbox-view.tsx restored into the running server, signed in as service@ctxchat.local in Chrome under TZ=America/Chicago, created a follow-up for 2026-09-01T00:30 - form posted the bare dueDate=2026-09-01T00:30, row stored 2026-09-01 00:30 UTC, UI read it back as Monday, August 31, 2026 at 7:30 PM; files restored to HEAD
  • Post-fix, same flow on this head: hidden dueAt posts 2026-09-01T05:30:00.000Z, picker carries no name, row stores 2026-09-01 05:30 UTC, reschedule picker reads back 09/01/2026, 12:30 AM, form resets after submit and no error page
  • psql ... SELECT title, "dueDate", ("dueDate" AT TIME ZONE 'UTC' AT TIME ZONE 'America/Chicago') FROM "Task" - pre-fix and post-fix rows compared side by side
  • Browser under TZ=Pacific/Auckland (her 08:09 on 1 Sept): form offers 2026-09-01T17:00 where the server in UTC would offer 2026-09-01T09:00; her 2026-09-02T08:00 pick stores 2026-09-01 20:00 UTC
  • Out-of-range guard in the browser: 9999-12-31T23:59 and 9999-12-31T18:00 marked invalid with the on-screen reason, 9999-12-31T17:59 -> 9999-12-31T23:59:00.000Z, 2026-09-04T16:45 -> 2026-09-04T21:45:00.000Z; pressing Add follow-up on the refused value keeps her on the thread with no error page and SELECT count(*) ... 'Overflow guard probe%' returns 0
  • No-JS server render via cookie-jar curl of /inbox/<id>: <input id="follow-up-due-date" type="datetime-local" required="" value=""/> with no name, and <input type="hidden" name="dueAt" value=""/>
  • Reschedule regression check: moved the follow-up to 2026-09-03T07:15 in her browser -> stored 2026-09-03 12:15 UTC, card reads Due in 3 days
  • Reported-only surface confirmed: /command-center?focus=overdue prints due 8/31/2026, 3:00:02 PM in the server's clock while the browser is at 15:14 CDT; /tasks and the thread card stay relative
⚠️ **Document** - 1 info
  • ℹ️ content/prds/2026-08-31-move-a-follow-up-when-the-plan-moves.md:89 - Two dated PRDs still state as present fact that createTask is broken, which this change fixed. 2026-08-31-move-a-follow-up-when-the-plan-moves.md:89 ("It still calls new Date() on the bare local string from the create form") and :121 ("Until createTask is fixed, a follow-up created at 5pm and rescheduled to 5pm can show two different times"); 2026-08-17-follow-up-in-one-click.md:55-56 ("The default due date is computed on the server, not in the browser" and "createTask, which parses a bare local-time string on the server"). Left untouched deliberately: intent decision 7 settles the reschedule PRD as left exactly as written because dated records keep what they were written with, and I did not re-litigate it or extend the edit to its sibling. Worth noting only because this repo already has a low-cost pattern for exactly this - an inline "Superseded on YYYY-MM-DD" note plus a "... superseded YYYY-MM-DD" suffix on the PRD index row, used in 2026-07-09-ai-ops-brief.md, 2026-07-10-one-click-demo-mode.md and 2026-08-17-attend-stops-asserting-what-it-does-not-know.md - so applying it to these two would be consistent rather than a rewrite. The exposure is bounded: AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md are the always-loaded owner of this fact and both now correctly say both writers take an instant and throw on a bare local value. Proposed as a separate housekeeping follow-up, not as work for this change.

Why this ships before the Command Center fix

Correcting the stored instant makes three Command Center surfaces visibly wrong that were
accidentally right before, and this is a deliberate, time-boxed trade rather than an
oversight. The reasoning belongs here so a later reader finds it rather than
reconstructing it.

All three flip, not two. Command Center reasons about a due date on the server's clock
in three places, and every one of them was accidentally correct while the write was wrong,
because the two errors were the same error in opposite directions and cancelled. Advisor in
America/Chicago picks 1 September 20:00:

old (bare-string write) new (correct instant)
stored 2026-09-01T20:00Z 2026-09-02T01:00Z
printed by toLocaleString() on a UTC server 9/1/2026, 8:00:00 PM - exactly her pick 9/2/2026, 1:00:00 AM
in the endOfDay(now) "due today" bucket yes no - reads as due tomorrow
raises that day's FOLLOW_UP_DUE sweep alert yes no

One surface improves in the same move. overdue is a plain instant comparison
(dueDate < now), so it is now correct where it previously flagged an 08:00 Chicago
follow-up as overdue at 04:00 on her clock.

Why ship the write first anyway. A wrong instant written today is wrong forever - every
follow-up created before this fix carries bad data permanently, and no later change can
recover the wall clock the advisor actually meant. A wrong label is wrong only until someone
fixes the label. Data correctness compounds; presentation does not. So the correct write is
taken now and a short, loudly documented window on display is accepted. The Command Center
work is being dispatched immediately rather than left queued.

Correction to the Intent section above. Its closing line, "Nothing else was found broken
beyond the Command Center display defect reported above", was written before this was
understood and understates it. The defect is not only a rendered string: it covers
day-bucketing (src/lib/data.ts) and the alert sweep (src/lib/notifications.ts) as well,
and all three were masked rather than merely pre-existing. src/lib/data.ts and
src/lib/notifications.ts are untouched here by decision.

A follow-up created from the thread was written against the server's clock
rather than hers. Reproduced with the dev server under TZ=UTC and the browser
in America/Chicago: a follow-up she set for 1 September at 00:30 posted the
picker's bare "2026-09-01T00:30", createTask read it with new Date() where it
was standing, and the row stored 2026-09-01T00:30Z. Attend then showed it back
to her as due 31 August at 19:30 - five hours early, and the wrong day.

The default the form offered had the same fault from the other side: it was
computed on the server, so defaultFollowUpDueDate reasoned about the server's
working day. From Pacific/Auckland, where her evening is already the server's
tomorrow, the form offered 17:00 on a day that had ended.

FollowUpDueDate now owns the field on the client: it seeds the default from her
clock, and posts the instant rather than the wall clock. The picker carries no
name, so there is no bare value in the form data at all. createTask reads dueAt
through instantFromZonedIso and throws on anything without an offset, matching
rescheduleTask, so a regression errors instead of silently storing a wrong hour.

The regression test pins both ends: a date picker may only be rendered where the
timezone is known, and a server action may only accept a date that names its
offset. Both assertions fail when either half is reverted.
…yped it in

The guard added by the last review round asked only whether the picker's value
converted, and a pick whose instant overflows into year 10000 converts fine.
9999-12-31 23:59 chosen anywhere west of UTC becomes +010000-01-01T05:59:00.000Z,
which instantFromZonedIso refuses, so createTask threw and the advisor got a full
error page from a date the browser had accepted. Any time from 18:00 onward on
that date does it in Central; year 9999 is four keystrokes.

The box now asks the server's own reader about the exact string it is about to
post, so it refuses precisely what the write refuses. A `max` on the picker was
measured and does not do this: a value equal to the max is not a range overflow,
so the case above walks straight through it, and a constant picked to clear the
worst offset would be an assumption about timezones sitting inside the code that
exists to stop assumptions about timezones.

Verified in the running app with the server under TZ=UTC and the browser in
America/Chicago: 9999-12-31 23:59 and 18:00 are marked invalid, the form refuses
to post and the reason is on screen; 17:59 still posts 9999-12-31T23:59:00.000Z;
an ordinary pick is untouched. No follow-up row is written and no error page is
reached.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 33283

The change correctly stores browser-selected follow-up instants, but the picker can still normalize a nonexistent daylight-saving local time into a different time, and one regression expectation depends on the calendar date. This is a bounded correctness risk that is mergeable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up to reject such values and pin the test date.

Pin the calendar date for the UTC expectation.

America/Chicago uses different UTC offsets during daylight-saving and standard time. State the selected date, or derive the expected UTC instant from that date.

🌐 Web query:

According to the ECMAScript Date specification, what does new Date("2026-03-08T02:30") produce when the host timezone is America/Chicago? Does it normalize this nonexistent DST-transition local time to 03:30?

💡 Result:

When parsing "2026-03-08T02:30" as a local time in an environment where that time does not exist—such as America/Chicago, where clocks spring forward from 02:00 to 03:00 on that date—the ECMAScript specification does not mandate a specific outcome, making the result implementation-defined [1][2]. In practice, most major JavaScript engines (like V8, used in Chrome and Node.js) will silently normalize this nonexistent "2:30 AM" to "3:30 AM" [3][4]. This occurs because the engine interprets the requested wall-clock time against the local timezone's daylight saving rules, realizes the time is invalid, and applies an adjustment to arrive at a valid instant [2]. Because this behavior is engine-dependent and effectively "guesses" the user's intent, it is considered a common source of bugs [5][3]. Developers are strongly advised to avoid parsing ambiguous or local-time strings without explicit offsets, or to use the newer Temporal API (e.g., Temporal.ZonedDateTime) which allows for explicit disambiguation policies (such as 'reject', 'earlier', or 'later') when encountering nonexistent or ambiguous times [6][5][7].

Reject nonexistent local times before posting dueAt.

In Chicago, 2026-03-08T02:30 can be normalized to 03:30 by instantFromDateTimeLocal, causing a different time to be posted and stored. Reject values that do not round-trip to the same browser-local datetime-local value. Apply this check in instantFromDateTimeLocal so both callers use the same contract.

…rship's day, not the server's (#32)

* fix(command-center): read a follow-up's due date on her clock, not the server's

Command Center answered three questions about a due date on the server's
clock, which is UTC on Vercel and is nobody's clock:

- the printed due date on a focus row, `task.dueDate.toLocaleString()` in
  the server render;
- the Follow-ups due today metric and the list behind it, bucketed against
  `endOfDay(now)`;
- `syncOperationalNotifications`, which raises FOLLOW_UP_DUE, bucketed the
  same way against `setHours(23, 59, 59, 999)`.

All three were masked until createTask started storing the instant the
advisor actually picked (#31). Two errors had been cancelling.

Reproduced in the running app - dev server under TZ=UTC, Chrome emulating
America/Chicago, signed in as the service advisor. A follow-up she set for
10pm last night printed as "due 8/31/2026, 3:00:00 AM", the wrong day. One
she set for 8pm tonight was missing from a metric reading 1 instead of 2,
absent from the list, and had no notification row at all.

The printed moment now goes to LocalTimestamp: the focus row carries the
instant as `dueAt` rather than a string data.ts already formatted. The two
queries read `src/lib/dealership-day.ts`, which answers when the
dealership's day ends in the zone named by DEALERSHIP_TIME_ZONE (default
America/Chicago).

The dealership's day rather than the viewer's, because the sweep runs from
a cron with no viewer to ask, and a second rule for it is how the metric
and the alert rail come to disagree on the same screen. The printed moment
and the counted day therefore differ by design for an advisor outside the
store's zone; reasoning in
content/decisions/2026-08-31-the-dealership-owns-the-day-a-follow-up-is-due-on.md.

Overdue is untouched: a plain instant comparison, already correct.

tests/dealership-day.test.ts carries the boundary unit tests - both DST
transitions, and zones half an hour and fourteen hours off UTC - plus three
tripwires that all fail on the code as it was: the metric and its list must
read one boundary, the sweep must read it too, and no non-client file may
format a moment.

Reported, not fixed: the message-volume and response-time windows in
getCommandCenterData still bound "today" on the server's day. Same class,
different question, named as a non-goal in the PRD.

* no-mistakes(review): validate DEALERSHIP_TIME_ZONE at load, widen render tripwire

* no-mistakes(document): supersede the prior PRD's Command Center due-date risk

* no-mistakes(document): correct DEALERSHIP_TIME_ZONE build-gate claim to the deploy build
