Install

Check Prerequisites first. The installer supplies the library and wrapper; CPU and kernel configuration is a separate step.

Install the latest release

Run this in a terminal as your normal user:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/brcly/linuwux-runtime/main/install.sh | bash

The installer requires Bash, curl, and standard Linux utilities including mktemp, od, tr, and install. Rust is only needed when building from source.

File Location
Command wrapper ~/.local/bin/linuwux
Runtime library ~/.local/share/linuwux/LinUwUx.so

The library name is case-sensitive. No root access is needed. Install from a normal host terminal when using Flatpak launchers, then follow Flatpak and containers.

To download and inspect the installer before running it:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/brcly/linuwux-runtime/main/install.sh -o install-linuwux.sh
less install-linuwux.sh
bash install-linuwux.sh

The installer downloads LinUwUx.so from GitHub Releases and checks its ELF magic bytes before installing. It does not verify a checksum or signature.

Check the installation

command -v linuwux
ls -l "$HOME/.local/bin/linuwux" "$HOME/.local/share/linuwux/LinUwUx.so"

command -v linuwux should resolve to the newly installed wrapper. If it prints nothing, add this to your Bash-compatible shell profile:

export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"

Sign out and back in so desktop applications inherit the updated PATH. You can also use the full wrapper path in your launcher's game settings:

/home/USERNAME/.local/bin/linuwux

Replace USERNAME with your Linux username. Steam needs %command% after this path; other launchers usually supply the game command themselves.

The wrapper has no --version option. To identify an installed library for a bug report, record its release tag or calculate its hash:

sha256sum "$HOME/.local/share/linuwux/LinUwUx.so"

Finding the files confirms installation, not in-game activation. For that, use the debug log.

Update or choose a release

Close games using LinUwUx, then run the installer again to update. For release selection and migration from the C runtime, see Updating and migration.

Uninstall

Close games using LinUwUx and remove its command prefix or direct LD_PRELOAD entry from each game. Then remove the installed files:

rm "$HOME/.local/bin/linuwux"
rm "$HOME/.local/share/linuwux/LinUwUx.so"

Remove any LinUwUx-specific environment variables you added. Host kernel parameters and separately installed CPUID emulation modules have their own removal procedures; see Prerequisites.

Continue with Launching to configure a game.
