Closes: #16069

Continues the work started in #17041 by @dgaponcic (their commit and sign-off are included).

  • Added --no-browser flag to argocd login and argocd relogin that uses the OAuth 2.0 Device Code Authorization Grant (RFC 8628) instead of the PKCE redirect flow.
  • The CLI prints a verification URL, polls the token endpoint automatically, and exits cleanly on Ctrl+C.
  • Bundled Dex is configured automatically (no operator changes required). External OIDC providers are supported via OIDC discovery; tokenURL/deviceURL remain as fallbacks for non-standard providers.

Tested against bundled Dex (GitHub connector) and Keycloak (external OIDC). Unit tests added for requestDeviceCode and pollForToken covering all RFC 8628 error codes, context cancellation, and deadline expiry.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added browserless SSO login and relogin with a device code. The CLI displays verification instructions while waiting for approval; browserless login requires SSO.
    • Added support for configuring OIDC device authorization and token endpoints when they aren’t available through provider discovery.
    • Updated bundled Dex configuration to support device-code sign-in when grant types aren’t explicitly restricted. Configurations that omit the grant receive a warning and remain unchanged.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup guidance and command examples for browserless SSO, including identity provider requirements.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Move device-flow helpers into util/oidc as a reusable package API
  • ➕ Reduces CLI-specific networking logic in command code
  • ➕ Encourages reuse for future UI/agent flows that may need device grants
  • ➖ Public API/design overhead and additional refactor scope for a beta feature
2. Use typed token response structs instead of map[string]any parsing
  • ➕ Stronger decoding guarantees and clearer error messages
  • ➕ Avoids silent type assertion failures on provider-specific responses
  • ➖ May require supporting multiple provider variants; current map approach is flexible
3. Provide a single endpoint-resolution helper (discovery → explicit config) shared by flows
  • ➕ Keeps OIDC discovery/fallback behavior consistent across login modes
  • ➕ Easier to validate missing endpoint errors early
  • ➖ Small duplication today; may be premature abstraction

Recommendation: Current approach is solid for a beta CLI feature: it prefers OIDC discovery and safely falls back to explicit deviceURL/tokenURL, adds Ctrl+C cancellation, and includes thorough error-path tests. Consider a follow-up to (1) decode token responses into structs and (2) centralize endpoint resolution if the feature expands beyond the CLI.

🔴 High

1. TLS client bypassed ✓ Resolved ●● Moderate 🐞 Bug ≡ Correctness
Description
oauth2LoginBrowserless uses a new default http.Client for device/token calls instead of the
TLS-configured client created by acdClient.HTTPClient(), so browserless login can fail with custom
CAs/insecure TLS/proxy/header settings.
Code

cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[R512-515]

+	httpClient := &http.Client{}
+
+	deviceResp, err := requestDeviceCode(ctx, httpClient, deviceURL, oauth2conf.ClientID, strings.Join(oauth2conf.Scopes, " "))
+	if err != nil {
Evidence
The login/relogin commands already build a TLS-configured HTTP client, but the new browserless flow
ignores it and uses a default client for the device/token endpoints, losing required transport
settings.

cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[141-152]
cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[512-516]
pkg/apiclient/apiclient.go[360-390]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

### Issue description
`oauth2LoginBrowserless` creates `httpClient := &http.Client{}` and uses it for device code and token polling requests. This ignores the Argo CD CLI client’s configured transport (TLS roots/insecure mode/proxy/headers), causing failures for deployments that require non-default HTTP/TLS behavior.

### Issue Context
The non-browserless SSO path builds a properly configured HTTP client via `acdClient.HTTPClient()` and installs it into the context before OIDC discovery. The browserless flow should reuse that same configured client for its direct HTTP calls.

### Fix Focus Areas
- cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[141-152]
- cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[492-536]
- cmd/argocd/commands/relogin.go[74-88]

### Suggested fix
- Change `oauth2LoginBrowserless` to accept a `httpDoer` (or `*http.Client`) parameter and pass the already-created `httpClient` from the caller.
- Use that passed client for both `requestDeviceCode` and `pollForToken`.
- Update both call sites (`login` and `relogin`) accordingly.

2. Polling defaults broken ✓ Resolved ●● Moderate 🐞 Bug ☼ Reliability
Description
pollForToken only defaults interval/expiresIn when values are negative, but omitted JSON fields
decode as 0, which can cause immediate expiry or tight-loop polling via time.After(0).
Code

cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[R420-423]

+	if interval < 0 {
+		interval = 5
+	}
+	if expiresIn < 0 {
Evidence
The device response fields are plain ints (zero by default), and those values are passed into
pollForToken where only negative values are defaulted; the polling loop then waits on
time.After(interval).

cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[419-441]
cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[526-527]
util/oidc/oidc.go[63-71]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

### Issue description
`pollForToken` uses `if interval < 0` / `if expiresIn < 0` to apply defaults. In practice, `interval`/`expires_in` are decoded into `int` fields, so missing values become `0`, which the current code treats as valid. That can lead to:
- `deadline := time.Now().Add(0)` causing immediate "expired" errors.
- `time.After(0)` causing a busy polling loop that can overload the provider.

### Issue Context
`OIDCDeviceCodeResponseBody` uses `int` fields for `interval` and `expires_in`, and the browserless flow passes them directly into `pollForToken`.

### Fix Focus Areas
- cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[419-441]
- cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[526-527]
- util/oidc/oidc.go[63-71]

### Suggested fix
- Treat `interval <= 0` as default (e.g., 5 seconds).
- Treat `expiresIn <= 0` as default (e.g., 300 seconds) or fail with a clear error if you require it.
- Prefer a `time.Ticker` / reusable `time.Timer` over allocating `time.After(...)` each loop iteration, and ensure timers are stopped/drained on context cancellation.

3. Bearer tokens logged ✓ Resolved ●● Moderate 🐞 Bug ⛨ Security
Description
The new browserless login path logs the id_token and refresh_token at debug level, which can leak
credentials into logs when debug is enabled.
Code

cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[R532-535]

+	fmt.Print("Authentication successful\n")
+	log.Debugf("Token: %s", idToken)
+	log.Debugf("Refresh Token: %s", refreshToken)
+	return idToken, refreshToken
Evidence
The new flow explicitly logs the full token strings, introducing a credential exposure risk tied to
this PR’s added login path.

cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[532-535]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

### Issue description
`oauth2LoginBrowserless` logs raw bearer tokens (`idToken` and `refreshToken`) via `log.Debugf`. Even at debug level, these values can end up in terminal history, CI logs, or centralized log aggregation, enabling account/session compromise.

### Issue Context
These are bearer credentials; anyone with access to them can typically act as the user until expiry (and refresh tokens often live longer).

### Fix Focus Areas
- cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[532-535]

### Suggested fix
- Remove these debug logs entirely, or log only non-sensitive metadata (e.g., token presence/length, or a short hash/fingerprint).
- Ensure no other new code paths print raw tokens.

4. Docs code fence lacks language ✓ Resolved ●● Moderate 📘 Rule violation ⚙ Maintainability
Description
The newly added CLI output snippet uses a fenced code block without a language identifier, which
violates the documentation formatting requirement and can reduce readability/consistency in rendered
docs.
Code

docs/operator-manual/user-management/index.md[555]

+```
Evidence
PR Compliance ID 6 requires documentation code examples to include a language identifier for syntax
highlighting. The added code fence for the sample CLI output starts with bare ``` (no language) in
docs/operator-manual/user-management/index.md.

5. Unsafe verification URL build ✓ Resolved ●● Moderate 🐞 Bug ≡ Correctness
Description
When verification_uri_complete is absent, oauth2LoginBrowserless concatenates "?user_code=" without
URL-encoding or handling existing query strings, which can produce an incorrect URL depending on
provider/user_code content.
Code

cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[R520-523]

+	verificationURL := deviceResp.VerificationUriComplete
+	if verificationURL == "" {
+		verificationURL = fmt.Sprintf("%s?user_code=%s", deviceResp.VerificationUri, deviceResp.UserCode)
+	}
Evidence
The code directly concatenates strings to form a URL instead of parsing and encoding, which is
incorrect when the base URL already has a query or when the user code contains characters needing
escaping.

cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[520-524]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

### Issue description
The browserless flow constructs a verification URL by doing `fmt.Sprintf("%s?user_code=%s", verification_uri, user_code)` when `verification_uri_complete` is empty. This fails to URL-encode `user_code` and will generate an invalid query if `verification_uri` already contains `?`.

### Issue Context
RFC 8628 provides both `verification_uri` and (optionally) `verification_uri_complete`. If the complete URI is absent, many providers expect the user to open `verification_uri` and manually enter `user_code`.

### Fix Focus Areas
- cmd/argocd/commands/login.go[520-524]

### Suggested fix
- Prefer printing `verification_uri` and `user_code` separately when `verification_uri_complete` is empty.
- If you still want to synthesize a URL, use `url.Parse` + `q := u.Query(); q.Set("user_code", code); u.RawQuery = q.Encode()` so encoding and `&` vs `?` are correct.

--browserless option must be used along with --sso and cannot be used in isolation right ? Is there a validation to ensure that ?

Yes, --browserless is ignored without an -sso and passwordLogin flow is used. I updated the option description to reflect that.

📝 Walkthrough

The CLI adds browserless SSO login and relogin through OAuth 2.0 device authorization. OIDC settings carry device and token endpoint URLs, and Dex configuration registers the device callback URI. Tests and documentation cover the flow and provider requirements.

Changes: Device-Code SSO

Layer / File(s) Summary
OIDC endpoint configuration
assets/swagger.json, server/settings/settings.proto, server/settings/settings.go, util/settings/settings.go
OIDC configuration adds optional deviceURL and tokenURL fields. Settings responses and exported configuration include these endpoint URLs.
Dex device-flow configuration
common/common.go, util/dex/config.go, util/dex/dex_test.go
Dex configuration adds the CLI device callback URI to the static client and warns when an explicit grant-type list omits the device-code grant. Tests check the callback URI and grant-list handling.
CLI device-code login
cmd/argocd/commands/login.go, cmd/argocd/commands/login_test.go, docs/user-guide/commands/argocd_login.md
argocd login adds --no-browser for SSO, builds verification instructions, requests a device code, and polls for tokens. The flow requires an id_token and supports cancellation. Tests cover verification prompt construction.
Relogin and device-flow guidance
cmd/argocd/commands/relogin.go, cmd/argocd/commands/relogin_test.go, docs/operator-manual/user-management/index.md, docs/user-guide/commands/argocd_relogin.md, docs/proposals/oauth2-device-code-flow.md
argocd relogin adds --no-browser to select device-code SSO. Tests check the option and token refresh behavior. Documentation describes command usage, provider requirements, and endpoint configuration.

Browserless login retains the existing server-side token checks, but the bundled Dex configuration now enables device authorization even when an operator explicitly excluded that grant. This broadens authentication policy on upgrade independently of whether users select browserless login.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: Dex configuration generation overrides an operator’s explicit grant allowlist by adding device_code at the issuer-wide oauth2 configuration level, rather than limiting the change to CLI selection. The base preserved that restriction. Startup and settings regeneration apply the broadened policy even when no user passes --no-browser, and removing the grant from the operator’s list does not disable it under the new generator.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The policy expansion affects bundled Dex instances with explicit grant lists excluding device_code. Because the mutation is issuer-wide, its configuration scope is broader than the CLI client. Any resulting Argo CD access remains bounded by provider-issued identities, accepted audiences and downstream authorization; the evidence does not establish cross-instance or fleet-wide compromise.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — For an explicitly restricted deployment, the generated policy permits a device-authentication route that the operator had excluded. This restores an authentication surface for device-code initiation and approval, rather than granting API access by itself. Provider authentication, device approval and server token enforcement remain necessary; an approval-bypass or forged-token attack was not demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Endpoint trust comes from server-provided issuer settings, discovery and configured fallbacks. API identity enforcement remains server-owned: OIDC verification checks signatures and configured audiences, rejects verification failures, and checks token revocation. Signature-verification recovery obtains fresh provider keys and repeats verification rather than accepting the failed token.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve operator ownership of explicit grant restrictions: require an explicit configuration opt-in before expanding a restricted grant list, while retaining automatic support where the operator relies on Dex defaults. Document the issuer-wide scope rather than presenting this as only a CLI-client change.

109-153: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Test --no-browser with an SSO-issued token.

The new test’s argocd issuer selects passwordLogin before relogin checks noBrowser. The other executable relogin test also uses an argocd token, and the constructor test checks only flag metadata. A regression that routes SSO relogin to browser OAuth instead of the device-code flow would pass these tests. Add a test that exercises the SSO branch and asserts the device-code flow is selected.

this re-adds device_code even when an operator restricted oauth2.grantTypes on purpose, and with /device/callback on the public argo-cd-cli client the flow now works on every bundled-Dex install. Can we add a check / validation so an explicit restriction is respected, or at least document it in the upgrade guide?
WDYT?

This structure and 2 functions were added in v0.13.0. It was almost at the same time the original issue #16069 was created. I think that's why these functions are missing.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Do not print a synthesized user_code URL as the primary link.

If verification_uri_complete is missing, RFC 8628 tells the client to show verification_uri and user_code. A provider is not required to accept user_code as a query parameter. Some providers ignore it, and some reject unknown parameters. The current prompt still puts the synthesized URL first. Users who open that URL can then reach a page that does not prefill the code. They must then find the "Or visit" line. The prompt works, but it can mislead users. Show the base URI and the code as the primary instruction. Keep the synthesized URL only if a provider is known to support it.

Proposed change
-	u, err := url.Parse(uri)
-	if err != nil {
- return fmt.Sprintf(" %s\n\n Enter the code: %s", uri, userCode)
-	}
-	q := u.Query()
-	q.Set("user_code", userCode)
-	u.RawQuery = q.Encode()
-	return fmt.Sprintf(" %s\n\n Or visit %s and enter the code: %s", u.String(), uri, userCode)
+	return fmt.Sprintf(" %s\n\n Enter the code: %s", uri, userCode)

Thanks for addressing my previous comments.
Please test the PR against Keycloak with PKCE - https://argo-cd.readthedocs.io/en/stable/operator-manual/user-management/keycloak/#keycloak
It seems to break in this case, looks like the --no-browser option should send PKCE similarly to the browser one to work for users who have Keycloak with PKCE as required in Argo CD docs.
Also, I made some additional minor docs/code comments suggestions.

Comment thread cmd/argocd/commands/login.go Outdated
// verification_uri and user_code separately so the user can enter the code
// manually — which is the correct fallback per the spec. If the provider
// returns a verification_uri with query parameters we still offer a
// synthesized URL as a convenience, with user_code properly encoded.

**Dex configuration (`util/dex/config.go`)**

The Dex configuration is updated as follows:
- The `argo-cd-cli` static client's `redirectURIs` now includes `/device/callback` (required by Dex internally during the device flow).

| OIDC provider does not support device code grant | If the provider rejects the device code request, the CLI exits with `Failed to request device code: <provider error>`. If the provider issues a device code but does not allow the grant (for example, Dex with `oauth2.grantTypes` set without `urn:ietf:params:oauth:grant-type:device_code`), the CLI prints the verification URL and then exits on the first poll with `oauth2: "unsupported_grant_type"`; Argo CD logs a warning when it generates such a Dex configuration. |

Got it. With PKCE Method S256 login failed with Missing parameter: code_challenge_method. To fix this I used the same code_challenge generator from oauth2Login in oauth2LoginNoBrowser. Now it works.
