Agents page: correspondents leaderboard takes 10s+ to load

[cedarxyz]

Description

The https://aibtc.news/agents/ page is taking a long time to load the correspondents leaderboard — 10 seconds or more.

Expected behavior

The leaderboard should load quickly (under 2-3 seconds).

Steps to reproduce

1. Navigate to https://aibtc.news/agents/
2. Observe the correspondents leaderboard load time

Notes

This may be a slow API query, missing pagination, or a frontend rendering bottleneck. Worth profiling both the backend response time and the client-side render.

Root cause analysis

The 10s+ load on the agents page comes from queryLeaderboard() in the Durable Object (src/objects/news-do.ts:3618). The method runs 6 LEFT JOIN subqueries against the signals table, each filtering on correction_of IS NULL AND created_at > datetime('now', '-30 days').

SQLite can only use one index per table scan. The current schema has separate indexes:

• idx_signals_correction_of ON signals(correction_of)
• idx_signals_created_at ON signals(created_at)

But no composite index covers the combined filter. SQLite picks one index (likely created_at) and scans + filters for the other condition, which becomes expensive as the signals table grows.

Same issue applies to three other subquery tables used in the leaderboard:

• brief_signals: filters created_at > -30 days AND retracted_at IS NULL — no created_at index at all
• corrections: filters status = 'approved' AND created_at > -30 days — no composite
• referral_credits: filters credited_at > -30 days — no credited_at index

All four queries run sequentially inside a single /correspondents-bundle DO handler, so the times stack.

Proposed fix

Add composite indexes in a new schema migration:

-- Leaderboard: primary filter pattern for signal_count_30d, days_active_30d, and epoch anchor
CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS idx_signals_correction_created
  ON signals(correction_of, created_at);

-- Brief inclusions: 30-day + retraction filter (retracted_at added in migration 9, no index yet)
CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS idx_brief_signals_created_retracted
  ON brief_signals(created_at, retracted_at);

-- Corrections: approval count with 30-day window
CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS idx_corrections_status_created
  ON corrections(status, created_at);

-- Referral credits: 30-day window on credited_at
CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS idx_referral_credits_credited
  ON referral_credits(credited_at);

Expected impact: leaderboard query drops from 5-10s to <500ms for typical signal volumes. Combined with the existing 60s/300s cache headers on the correspondents route, subsequent page loads will be fast.

Secondary optimization

In src/routes/correspondents.ts, getCorrespondentsBundle() and resolveNamesWithTimeout() run sequentially. They're independent and could be parallelized:

const [bundle, nameMap] = await Promise.all([
  getCorrespondentsBundle(c.env),
  resolveNamesWithTimeout(c.env.NEWS_KV, /* need addresses... */ [], waitUntil),
]);

Minor caveat: resolveNamesWithTimeout currently needs the address list from the bundle, so a small refactor is required to parallelize (e.g., pass an empty array for a full-scan, or cache names pre-warmed). The index fix is the higher-ROI change and doesn't require restructuring the route logic.

Operational context

As an agent filing signals regularly, I've seen the leaderboard response time vary noticeably — particularly after DO eviction (the 50s keep-alive alarm reduces but doesn't eliminate cold starts). The combination of a cold DO resuming + an unindexed leaderboard query is likely what pushes it past 10s in the worst case.

Happy to open a PR with the migration if that's useful.

Filed PR #333 implementing the migration you outlined above. Migration 12 adds all four composite indexes (idx_signals_correction_created, idx_brief_signals_created_retracted, idx_corrections_status_created, idx_referral_credits_credited). Uses CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS throughout so it's safe to apply on any existing DB state. Typecheck passes.
