A Windows PowerShell 5.1 notification-area application that watches a source folder for completed media downloads, transfers eligible video files with Robocopy, and removes the source folder only after the transfer passes its configured safety checks.
- Runs automatically when the configured Windows user signs in.
- Lives in the Windows notification area beside the clock.
- Uses an animated circular progress display with Robocopy percentage.
- Supports persistent pause and resume with a red/green slider.
- Provides a filtered append-only live activity log.
- Allows persistent source and destination folder changes.
- Recreates a missing source folder when its drive or network root is available.
- Prompts before overwriting an existing destination file.
- Can keep the destination copy and delete the new source folder.
- Includes twelve color themes and an owner-drawn installed-font selector.
- Includes bundled asynchronous notification sounds.
- Avoids destination staging folders, remote rename operations, and full-file hashing.
Source: B:\!!!!!!!Movies
Destination: \\chef.local\movies3
Both locations can be changed from the application and are saved persistently.
The watcher processes only an immediate source subfolder that:
- Contains exactly one supported video file when searched recursively.
- Has a video file of at least 500 MB.
- Has stopped changing and is no longer locked by another application.
- Does not contain blocked software, installer, archive, disc-image, audio, or incomplete-download file types.
Supported video extensions include:
.mkv .mp4 .avi .mov .m4v .wmv .mpg .mpeg .ts .m2ts .webm
Allowed sidecar files such as subtitles, artwork, NFO files, and text files are removed with the source folder after a successful transfer.
- The destination filename is based on the immediate source folder name.
- The completed video is renamed locally inside its source folder.
- Robocopy writes the video directly to the final destination filename.
- Robocopy must return a successful exit code below
8. - The source must remain unchanged during transfer.
- Source and destination byte counts must match.
- The source subfolder is then removed.
No SHA-256 verification is performed. Matching byte counts provide less corruption detection than hashing but avoid rereading the complete source and destination files.
Download the release ZIP, extract it, open PowerShell as Administrator, and run:
cd "C:\path\to\Media-Folder-Watcher"
powershell.exe -NoProfile -STA -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File ".\Install-Or-Replace-MediaFolderWatcher.ps1"The default installed location is:
C:\ProgramData\WiredWest\MediaFolderWatcher
The scheduled-task name is:
Media Folder Watcher - Chef Movies3
The task runs in the logged-in user's interactive session so the tray icon and popup windows can appear.
.\Check-MediaFolderWatcher-Status.ps1The full unfiltered log is stored at:
C:\ProgramData\WiredWest\MediaFolderWatcher\logs\media-folder-watcher.log
Run PowerShell as Administrator:
powershell.exe -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File ".\Uninstall-MediaFolderWatcher.ps1"User settings are stored under:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\WiredWest\MediaFolderWatcher
This includes:
- Pause state
- Source path
- Destination path
- Color theme
- Font selection
- Working notification sound
- Finished notification sound
The repository includes non-destructive visual tests:
.\Test-Tray-Control.ps1
.\Test-Transfer-Popup.ps1
.\Test-Collision-Popup.ps1Test-Slider-Settings-Interface.ps1 starts the complete watcher interface temporarily. Stop any installed watcher first to avoid displaying two tray icons.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Windows PowerShell 5.1
- Robocopy
- Interactive logged-in desktop session
- Access to the configured source and destination locations
The application can permanently remove source folders after transfers or when the user explicitly selects Keep Destination — Delete Source Folder. Test it with noncritical files before relying on it for unattended production use.
