Add in-app auto-update check for desktop builds #109

Open

Description

@purnankgogarkar

Currently the desktop builds (Windows .msi/.exe, macOS .dmg, Linux .deb/.AppImage) have no update mechanism — users have to manually check Releases and reinstall. For a tool that ships frequent builds (multiple releases a week per the Actions history), this is a real gap for anyone running the desktop app long-term.

    Thank you for bringing this up! We've implemented an in-app update check and notification system for all desktop builds.

    What's New:

    1. Automatic Background Check: The desktop app silently checks GitHub Releases for new updates periodically (every 24 hours to respect API limits, without slowing down startup).
    2. Visual Notification Badge: When a new version is released, an update indicator dot lights up on the top navigation bar.
    3. Interactive Update Modal:
      • Displays the latest version number, release date, and release notes directly inside the app.
      • OS-Aware Smart Downloads: Automatically detects your platform and offers one-click direct downloads (e.g., Windows Portable ZIP or Installer EXE, macOS DMG, Linux AppImage/DEB).
      • Expandable section to view downloads for all other platforms.
      • Options to "Remind me later" or "Skip this version".
    4. Manual Check: You can click the update icon in the header anytime to check immediately.
      This will be included starting in our next release. Thanks again for helping improve PDFCraft!
