Keep the required Host check at its sole forwarding call site. Remove the one-comparison wrapper, its imports, and its mirrored unit test. Existing tunnel tests cover the transport path. Relates to #1817
Stop replaying submitted POST requests after ambiguous transport failures, drain completed relay tasks, and aggregate unknown routing targets under bounded metric labels. Refs: #1817
Remove the fair-direction selector and its backlog test. The router is used for raw QUIC, whose request streams are bidirectional. Prefer those streams in both relay loops while retaining completed-task collection and shutdown priority. Relates to #1817
State that stargate-k8s-router is deployed only for raw QUIC tunnel traffic and that bidirectional stream priority is intentional. Optional HTTP/3 and WebTransport code does not imply a deployment requirement. Add scoped agent guidance, a root discovery pointer, and the companion CLAUDE.md import so implementation and review agents share this context. Relates to #1817

Independent verification against main 51f98c7 confirms this layer remains necessary:
Review fixes pushed in 041e991. Both original CodeRabbit threads answered with evidence and resolved. Fresh scoped validation passed 635 tests (three existing performance tests ignored). Clippy and final-base validation continue. Required GitHub workflows filter PRs to main/release bases. This PR stays on its protocol base until #1818 settles, then will reconcile only this layer, target main, pass exact-head CI, and obtain final review before entering the merge queue. Shared issue #1817 remains open. |

Protocol predecessor #1818 is confirmed merged at 29d7ddd after its exact-head Ada approval and green merge-group checks. GitHub now shows this PR targeting main with conflicts pending reconciliation. The benchmark layer #1826 remains necessary: the current-main benchmark driver, scorer and native mock are byte-identical to the independently verified defective baseline. It will stay stacked until #1823 settles. Shared issue #1817 remains open through final landing and verification of all domains. |

Reconciled this proxy layer with merged #1818 and main at 29d7ddd, preserving history and current capacity-admission behavior. Final head: 96fb7b4. The diff against main contains only the ten proxy-layer files. Scoped Cargo passed 728 tests; three existing performance tests ignored and one independently reproduced macOS occupied-port test skipped. Scoped all-target Clippy, touched Rust formatting, whitespace and skill-fanout passed. One capacity test failed in the first sweep, then passed on focused PR/main runs and the complete rerun. Exact-head GitHub CI is running before final review. |

The duplicate-POST fix, the unknown-target metric aggregation, and the relay task reaping look right to me. Three inline comments: a metric gap for the new 502s, a question about the retry trade-off, and a description mismatch in the relay loop.
Pre-initialize a label-free ambiguity counter and verify it on delayed-header POSTs. Preserve fair normal relay scheduling and document the conservative retry trade-off. Include current main without changing Stargate behavior from that update. Relates to #1817 Signed-off-by: jcameron <jcameron@nvidia.com>

Final head ff7985d approved after all three review findings were addressed. All 21 exact-head checks passed, including 17 Stargate Bazel tests; 728 scoped Cargo tests and Clippy passed locally. No unresolved threads. Submitted this main-based layer to the required squash merge queue without rule bypass; monitoring merge-group CI and actual merge state. #1823 follows after this layer lands. |

Merged into main as 439d964 at 2026-09-30T22:51:37Z. Ada approved final head ff7985d; all five actionable review threads are resolved. Final-head checks and all seven merge-group workflows passed, including 17/17 selected Bazel tests. Scoped local Cargo validation passed 728 tests, with three existing performance tests ignored and one independently reproduced macOS port test skipped. The proxy branch was automatically deleted by repository policy after merge, then restored at the reviewed head to preserve stack references. #1823 is now based on main and its owner can reconcile the registration layer. Shared issue #1817 remains open for final stack verification. No dependency, license or NOTICE changes. |

TL;DR
Prevent replaying accepted POSTs after uncertain tunnel delivery. Reap completed relay tasks while accepting streams and aggregate unknown-target 404 metrics into one pre-initialized series.
Additional Details
Current main can retry a completed POST body after a response-header timeout, although the backend may already have accepted it. Each attempt now records body handoff. A transport failure after handoff ends with delivery ambiguity, including when retry limits have expired. Failures before handoff and explicit retryable pylon rejections preserve their existing retry rules. Local buffered writes cannot prove backend receipt. If a peer died before detection, this conservative rule can return 502 even when the POST never reached the backend, including during rollouts. Availability is traded for avoiding duplicate submissions; no exactly-once guarantee is claimed.
Both relay loops collect completed JoinSet entries during acceptance. The normal loop keeps main's randomized selection between ready accepts and completions. The drain loop keeps its existing drain-first and bidirectional-before-unidirectional priority. Router guidance documents raw-quic and webtransport support; plain http3 uses L4 passthrough. The existing request sequence diagram documents uncertain delivery.
The label-free, pre-initialized stargate_proxy_ambiguous_delivery_total counter measures requests that stop on ambiguous delivery. Existing metric names and label sets remain intact.
Unknown model/routing-key headers previously created permanent metric series. Their 404s now use empty target labels; rejected identities remain available in logs.
For the Reviewer
Layer 2 follows merged #1818 and targets main. The diff contains only this proxy layer. Next layer: #1823.
Both original CodeRabbit findings were independently verified, fixed, and answered. Ada's three comments were also addressed: ambiguity is counted, the conservative availability trade-off is explicit, and normal relay scheduling retains main's fairness.
For QA
Fresh local validation at ff7985d, reconciled with main 543a198:
Independent main probes reproduced two backend executions with status 200 and 128 unknown-target metric series. A completed-task primitive probe confirmed retention until joining; both relay loops lacked collection while accepting streams. Whole-workspace formatting has existing drift in three unrelated files. All 21 exact-head checks passed, including Rust CodeQL and Stargate Bazel (17 selected tests passed). No live cluster, GPU campaign, or production memory soak was run.
Issues
Relates to #1817
Customer Release Notes
Stargate avoids duplicate inference submissions after uncertain transport failures and bounds retained relay completions and unknown-target metric series.
Plan Summary
Not applicable.
Usage
A transport failure after body handoff returns the upstream transport error. Explicit retryable pylon rejections can still retry within configured limits.
Dependencies
No added or upgraded third-party dependencies. No license review or NOTICE changes required.
