fix(onboard): cancel on stdin EOF typed between prompts - #12216
yanyunl1991 wants to merge 9 commits into
Conversation
Interactive prompts own stdin only while a question is outstanding, so a Ctrl-D that reaches the terminal between two questions is still queued when the next prompt starts. readline switches the TTY to raw mode before its first read and the queued end-of-file indication does not survive that mode change, so the configuration-review prompt waited for an answer that could never arrive: onboarding hung at `Choose [1]:` without printing `Installation cancelled` or exiting non-zero. Prompts that carry the EOF-cancellation contract now read stdin for one queued-read window before handing it to readline or a raw-mode reader. A pending EOF surfaces as a normal stream end and becomes the documented cancellation; type-ahead is pushed back so the prompt still answers with it. Non-TTY stdin keeps today's exact path and timing. Fixes #12169 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Yanyun Liao <yanyunl@nvidia.com>

The pending-input window reported cancellation for any stdin end it saw, including the end of a pipe that had just delivered the answer, and it rejected before the question was printed. `nemoclaw config set` then skipped its confirmation line and refused a supplied answer. Input now ends the window immediately and is handed back, so the prompt answers with it and observes the EOF behind it as before; a window that only sees the EOF echoes the question before reporting the cancellation, keeping the transcript identical to an EOF typed at the prompt. Ready for review — rebased onto current Merge with Two conflicts, both mechanical. Verified on our DGX Spark aarch64 test host (GB10 GPU) at the post-merge head. The package-contract suite drives a real pty against the built artifacts: The #12169 case is the reported shape — answer one question, then type Ctrl-D in the gap before the next one — and CI is green (86 checks, 0 failing). Two shard legs went red first with 5 s timeouts in One scheduling note: #12210 touches the same budget line and the same area of |
## Outcome A `Ctrl-D` typed at a masked prompt now cancels onboarding the same way it does at every other prompt: the reader rejects with the pending-stdin EOF error, so the run prints `Installation cancelled`, exits non-zero, and keeps the resumable session. A `Ctrl-D` typed after the first character is ignored and the masked answer survives, matching readline, which ends only on an empty line. The documentation now states that rule. ## Reason `readSecretAnswer()` enables raw mode, which suppresses the terminal's own end-of-file handling, and its `onData` handler had no branch for `\u0004`. The byte is below the printable range, so it fell through without changing the answer or settling the prompt, and neither `end` nor `close` fires in raw mode. The API key prompt therefore waited for input that could never arrive, while the surrounding documentation promised cancellation at any question. ### Related issues Refs #12169 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Keep main's tightened fan-out ceiling for src/lib/sandbox/config.ts (17); this branch does not touch that file and its older value of 18 only predates main's tightening. Keep 23 for src/lib/policy/index.ts. The file now imports src/lib/core/pending-stdin-eof, which is one more first-party dependency than main carries, and the budget check reports an actual fan-out of 23 against main's ceiling of 22. Blocking: the shared pending-EOF handoff is not applied to every supported raw-mode onboarding prompt, so the stated Ctrl-D contract remains broken. The three readers in src/lib/onboard/policy-selection-prompts.ts and the selector in src/lib/onboard/hermes-managed-tools.ts enter raw mode without first consuming a queued terminal EOF. A Ctrl-D typed between prompts can therefore be dropped by the raw-mode transition and leave onboarding waiting indefinitely. In addition, readChannelKeys in src/lib/onboard/messaging-selector.ts passes each raw byte through applyMessagingSelectorKey but does not treat \u0004 as EOF, so Ctrl-D typed while that menu owns stdin is ignored.
This is reproducible from the exact-head control flow and makes supported policy, messaging, and Hermes onboarding paths unusable after the cancellation input. Please apply the pending-EOF handoff before every raw selector, handle empty-input Ctrl-D in each raw onData loop, and add PTY regressions for the policy, messaging, and Hermes paths that assert cancellation, terminal cleanup, and exit status 1.
Recommended exact-head E2E evidence: full-e2e, inference-routing, network-policy, onboard-repair, and onboard-resume passed in https://github.com/NVIDIA/NemoClaw/actions/runs/38390496825. security-posture passed for OpenClaw; its Hermes shard failed at configExport.passed in test/e2e/live/hermes-e2e.test.ts:920. Current main has the same selector and assertion failure in https://github.com/NVIDIA/NemoClaw/actions/runs/38358664745/job/115168297647, so that red is a baseline failure and is not the reason for this Request changes decision.
Refresh the branch onto current main (90 commits). No conflicts. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The pending-EOF handoff only covered readline prompts, the credential reader and the messaging menu. The policy-tier menu, both policy-preset menus and the Hermes managed-tools menu switched the terminal to raw mode without first consuming a Ctrl-D queued between questions, so the switch dropped it and the menu waited forever. Inside a raw-mode menu Ctrl-D also arrives as an ordinary byte instead of an end-of-file, and none of those menus, including the messaging menu, treated it as one. Each raw-mode menu now runs the shared pending-EOF window before raw mode starts and treats a 0x04 byte as a closed stdin. None of the menus has a typed answer to protect, so the key always cancels. The three policy menus cancel through the same path as Ctrl-C there, which marks the sandbox cancel rollback and exits 1; the messaging and Hermes menus reject with the prompt EOF error, which onboarding reports as "Installation cancelled" with exit 1. The policy menus take the window as an injectable dependency. It stays synchronous when nothing is pending, so the menu attaches its key listener on the same tick as before, and unit tests with an injected stdin keep their existing timing. Add PTY contract tests that drive all three menu families through a real pseudo-terminal, press Ctrl-D both between questions and inside the menu, and assert exit status 1, the cancellation report, and that the terminal is no longer in raw mode at exit. Without this change five of the six cases hang until the deadline; the sixth, messaging between questions, already passed because that menu had the handoff. @rsliter Thanks for the detailed review — addressed in e073b28.
New PTY contract tests in test/package-contract/onboard/onboard-raw-selector-eof.test.ts cover policy, messaging and Hermes, each with Ctrl-D both between questions and inside the menu, asserting exit status 1, the cancellation report, and that the terminal is out of raw mode at exit. With the source change reverted, five of the six hang until the deadline; the sixth (messaging, between questions) already passed because that menu had the handoff. Could you take another look? |

Approve. The follow-up resolves the prior blocker. The policy, messaging, and Hermes raw-mode selectors now consume queued terminal EOF before raw mode and treat Ctrl-D as EOF. The package contract covers Ctrl-D between prompts and inside each menu, exit status 1, and terminal cleanup. Required checks pass.
Security review: PASS for secrets and credentials, input validation, authentication and authorization, dependencies, error handling and logging, cryptography and data protection, configuration, security testing, and system security. The TTY-only handoff preserves piped input, uses the existing EOF error contract, and restores terminal state.
The PR Review Advisor reviewed this latest PR commit and recommends no additional live E2E selector. Its deterministic PTY coverage exercises the changed terminal boundary.

The implementation and existing source/package-contract coverage look correct for credentials, messaging, Hermes, and pipe-backed policy EOF. The refreshed functional, CLI, security, image-startup, and exact runtime-activation checks completed successfully.
I cannot merge this revision because the exact-head PR Review Advisor run 39446172029 failed its blocker gate with one validated P1 verification finding. I confirmed the gap: test/package-contract/cli/policy-prompt-eof.test.ts covers an already-ended pipe, but it has no pseudo-terminal case for Ctrl-D queued between policy prompts. Please add the narrow PTY case recommended by the Advisor, asserting non-zero cancellation, the picker transcript, and no policy mutation, then rerun the Advisor on the new exact head.
Recommended E2E context: the exact-head Advisor recommends no additional live E2E selectors because the required live validation floor already covers the relevant lifecycle, policy, and credential boundaries.
Security review: PASS for secrets, input validation, authorization boundaries, dependencies, logging, cryptography, configuration, and whole-system behavior. Test coverage is WARNING until the policy-picker terminal queued-EOF assertion is present. This is an evidence blocker, not a vulnerability finding.
Summary
A Ctrl-D that reaches the terminal while onboarding is working between two questions is silently dropped, so the configuration-review prompt never settles:
nemoclaw onboardwaits atChoose [1]:forever instead of printingInstallation cancelledand exiting non-zero. This PR makes every prompt that carries the stdin-EOF cancellation contract recover that queued cancellation.Closes #12169.
Reproduction

main(before fix)The same shape against tag
v0.0.127also hangs, so this is not a difference between the reporter's build andmain.Observed on
fix/...(after fix)The resumable onboarding session written by that cancelled run keeps the collected selection, which answers the second half of the report:
{ "resumable": true, "status": "failed", "lastStepStarted": "provider_selection", "sandboxName": "review-session", "provider": "ollama-local", "model": "qwen2.5:1.5b" }Note on the reported symptom. The report records exit code
0; every shape reproduced here hangs instead (no exit at all until the harness gives up). The broken contract is the same one — a premature stdin EOF at the configuration-review prompt is not treated as cancellation,Installation cancelledis not printed, and the command never reaches the documented non-zero status — and the fix restores it. If the reporter's harness observes a0from a watchdog that reaps the hung process, that reading is consistent with this hang.Analysis
All interactive onboarding prompts go through
prompt()insrc/lib/credentials/store.ts, which owns stdin only while a question is outstanding:createPromptActivityCleanuppauses and unrefs stdin when the prompt settles, so onboarding steps between questions (and any child process sharing the terminal) are not competing for input.A Ctrl-D typed inside one of those gaps therefore stays queued in the terminal; nothing is reading it. The next prompt never sees it:
readline.createInterface()switches the TTY to raw mode before its first read, and the queued end-of-file indication does not survive that mode change (in raw mode the byte would no longer mean EOF either).rl.on("close")— the handler added for #5976 that turns a premature EOF intocode: "EOF", whichhandleOnboardCommandErrorreports asInstallation cancelled— is never reached, so the promise never settles and onboarding waits atsrc/lib/onboard/prompt-helpers.ts:73(Choose [1]:) indefinitely. This was isolated on hardware, away from onboarding, with two
prompt()calls separated by a short gap: Ctrl-D at the second prompt rejects withEOFas designed, Ctrl-D in the gap hangs. It also explains why a piped stdin is unaffected — a pipe reports its EOF through the same stream end whenever the prompt gets around to reading, with no mode change in between.Fix
New
src/lib/core/pending-stdin-eof.tsexportstakePendingStdinEof(): before a prompt takes stdin, it reads for one queued-read window (10 ms) so a pending EOF surfaces as a normal streamend/close. Input beats a queued EOF — the first chunk ends the window immediately and is unshifted back, so an already-typed (or piped) answer still answers the question and the prompt observes any EOF behind it exactly as before. A window that sees only the EOF echoes the question before rejecting, so the transcript is identical to an EOF typed while the question is on screen. The window is only opened forisTTY === true; every other caller gets a synchronousfalseand keeps today's exact code path and timing.Prompts that carry the EOF-cancellation contract call it first and reject with the shared
pendingStdinEofError()(code: "EOF"), which is the same rejection theirclosehandlers already produce, so no caller sees a new error shape.Whole-class enumeration — every site that reads stdin for an interactive answer:

The window cannot strand the process: its timer stays ref'd (an unref'd timer would let the process exit mid-prompt, which is the silent-exit shape of this very bug), listeners are removed on every settle path, stdin is left paused exactly as the prompts expect, and after
endnothing is unshifted (the stream rejects it and the caller is cancelling anyway). Cancelling this way runs the existing#5976path, so the resumable session is preserved as shown above.Tests.
src/lib/core/pending-stdin-eof.test.tspins the window contract: synchronousfalsefor piped/unknown stdin, cancellation onendand onclose, no cancellation for a quiet terminal (and stdin left paused), type-ahead handed back, an answer that arrives ahead of a closing stdin still answered, listeners released.test/package-contract/onboard/onboard-stdin-eof.test.tsadds the process-level regression lock — a pty answers the first prompt, closes stdin between questions, and the command must printInstallation cancelledand exit1.
