We now have a concrete plan for borders as part of the style configuration rework: #1022 describes the overall design, and #1024 covers bar borders, module borders and the default island style (including islands on a solid bar). The config part is already in progress in #1029. Closing this in favor of those issues, please follow along and comment there if something from your use case is missing.
Please add an option to have borders around the islands and the bar itself. Also a style with a solid background but islands with bordes would be good to have.,
