PulseMesh is an open distributed task orchestration engine designed for high-throughput batch processing and workflow execution. It provides atomic lease fencing, dead-letter queue isolation, dynamic DAG workflow scheduling, and real-time observability telemetry.
- Throughput: Sustains up to 12,000 tasks/min on a single 4-core worker pool.
- Failover Recovery: 5-second automatic zombie worker lease reclamation using heartbeat watchdogs.
- DAG Execution: Validates and resolves directed acyclic dependency graphs in O(V + E) time using Kahn's algorithm.
- Security & Rate Limiting: Multi-tenant RBAC, SHA-256 API key authentication, per-IP/account rate limiting with exponential backoff, and sanitized error responses.

- PostgreSQL as the Sole Durable Source of Truth: All job states, execution attempts, DAG versions, and dead-letter queues are persisted in PostgreSQL.
- Transactional Outbox Pattern: Job creation and event logging happen in the same atomic database transaction, completely eliminating dual-write inconsistencies.
-
Atomic Non-Blocking Claims (
SKIP LOCKED): Workers pull work concurrently usingSELECT ... FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED, preventing lock contention and starvation across threads. -
Lease Fencing (
$G+1$ ): Every claimed task is assigned a uniquelease_tokenand an incrementingexecution_generation. Zombie worker mutations with expired tokens are rejected at the database level. -
Kahn's Topological DAG Engine: Dynamic workflows are validated and parallelized in
$O(V + E)$ time, rejecting circular dependencies before any task starts.
Every operation in PulseMesh is bound by 6 formal invariants verified by an automated test suite:
| Invariant | Distributed Property | Mathematical Rule | Failure Mode Prevented |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invariant 1 | Mutual Lease Exclusivity | $ | {w \in W \mid \text{holdsValidLease}(w, J)} |
| Invariant 2 | State Monotonicity | Completed or cancelled jobs resurrecting into running state. | |
| Invariant 3 | Fencing Token Gate | Zombie workers writing stale outputs after network partitions. | |
| Invariant 4 | DAG Precedence Order | Downstream tasks firing before dependencies finish. | |
| Invariant 5 | Atomic Idempotency | $\text{submit}(k) \implies | \text{createdJobs}(k) |
| Invariant 6 | Scheduler Deduplication | Concurrent schedulers double-triggering recurring crons. |

- Fast, zero-overhead REST interface with multi-tenant RBAC (
ADMIN,OPERATOR,WORKER,VIEWER). - Real-time Server-Sent Events (SSE) broadcasting cluster state changes to all connected dashboards within
<5ms. - Built-in Sliding Window Rate Limiting and Idempotency key tracking.
- Workers pull tasks using
SELECT ... FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED. - Active jobs are guarded by heartbeats (every 2s). While working, workers hold a cryptographically random
lease_token. - Safe Execution Allowlist: Built-in handlers for
image_resize,csv_processing,report_generation,data_transform, andmock_payment.
- Periodically scans for jobs in
runningstate whoseleased_untiltimestamp has expired. - Automatically transitions abandoned jobs to
retry_wait, increments the execution generation ($G \to G+1$ ), and re-enqueues the job. - If a zombie worker wakes up and attempts to commit, the query
WHERE id = $id AND lease_token = $tokenmatches 0 rows and the mutation is rejected.
- Parses standard 5-part cron expressions (e.g.,
*/10 * * * *). - Guarantees exactly-once firing on every tick across distributed scheduler replicas through a unique constraint
UNIQUE(schedule_id, scheduled_at).
- Production-grade UI built with React, Tailwind CSS, and Lucide icons.
- Global Command Palette (
βK/Ctrl+K) for instant fuzzy search across routes, jobs, workers, queues, and workflows. - Dynamic SVG time-series charts for throughput and latency.
- 100% mobile-responsive layout across all form factors (320px to 4K displays).
-
Kahn's Topological Sort: Analyzes in-degrees, extracts parallel execution layers, and detects circular dependency graphs (
$A \to B \to C \to A$ ) in$O(V+E)$ time. -
SSRF DNS Resolver: Resolves hostnames before HTTP requests to block loopback addresses (
127.0.0.1), private subnets (10.0.0.0/8,192.168.0.0/16), and cloud metadata (169.254.169.254). -
Exponential Backoff with Jitter: Calculates retry delays with Full Jitter to prevent "thundering herd" spikes on downstream services:
$$T_{\text{wait}} = \text{random}(0, \min(T_{\text{max}}, T_{\text{base}} \times 2^{\text{attempt}}))$$
The PulseMesh dashboard provides 8 dedicated operational panels:
| Panel | Capabilities |
|---|---|
| System Overview | 4 observability KPI cards, dynamic SVG throughput/latency telemetry waveforms, and live recent jobs table. |
| Queue Explorer | Multi-queue partition inspection, priority histogram (P1-P10), pause/resume partition drains, and fair-share aging metrics. |
| Job Inspector | Searchable task history, full JSON payload viewer, execution attempt history, and manual re-drive triggers. |
| DAG Workflows | Interactive DAG graph canvas, topological step execution, 1-click architecture templates (Media Fan-Out, Order Saga, ML Inference). |
| Worker Radar | Live compute instance fleet, memory telemetry, heartbeat status, and graceful node draining. |
| Schedules | Cron schedule manager, tick countdown timer, and deduplication execution logs. |
| Chaos Simulator | Live failure injection lab: Worker Crash Mid-Job, Duplicate Idempotency Storm, Zombie Stale Commit, Poison Pill DLQ, and Cyclic DAG Attack. |
| API Keys & RBAC | SHA-256 hashed token provisioning, permission matrix, and copy-paste SDK snippets (cURL, Node.js, Python). |
