AGofIF: An Interactive Educational Platform for Introducing Genetic Algorithm Concepts

Project Description

AGofIF is an interactive web-based platform designed to facilitate the teaching and learning of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) through intuitive simulations and visualizations. Inspired by the challenges of teaching abstract AI concepts, the platform provides hands-on experiences for students and educators, allowing users to configure key parameters (such as mutation rates and selection methods) and observe their impact on evolutionary processes in real time. The project was evaluated in technical high school and undergraduate classes, demonstrating significant improvements in conceptual clarity and engagement. Over 94% of participants found the tool effective and intuitive for learning GAs.

Project Structure

  • src/
    • assets/: Contains images and icons.
    • scripts/: JavaScript files for simulation logic, helpers, modal management, and execution steps.
    • styles/: CSS files for global and simulation-specific styling.
  • index.html: Main entry point for the platform.
  • components/: Additional JavaScript modules for modal dialogs and UI components.
  • README.md, README_ptbr.md: Documentation in English and Portuguese.

Access and Usage

  • Online Platform: Available
  • Clone the repository:
    git clone https://github.com/Geessyca/genetic-algorithm-edu-platform.git
  • Local Usage: Open index.html in your web browser. No installation required.

Results and Dissemination

This project was accepted as a poster at IHC 2025.

Key Results:

  • The platform improved students' understanding of genetic operators and evolutionary processes.
  • 94%+ of users found the simulation intuitive and suitable for educational use.
  • The tool supports both guided and step-by-step learning, making GAs accessible to beginners.
