Summary

The comfy-agent v1 host now reports install and startup health as [agent-event] records (Comfy-Org/cloud#14456). Today agentTap drops the new event names as unknown_events_dropped. This PR widens the tap so they reach PostHog, and mirrors the failure events to Datadog.

New events (comfy.desktop.comfyui.agent.*):

  • startup_step: step, outcome=ok|degraded|failed, duration_ms, reason
  • startup_stalled, startup_failed (step, reason)
  • document_host_degraded, agent_orphans_stopped (count)

New fields on existing events:

  • agent_starting: attempt, python_arch, python_version
  • agent_started ready summary: startup_ms, crdt, cli, comfyui, comfyui_found_by, comfyui_match, shell, sandbox, assets
  • agent_exited: uptime_ms, ready, crash
  • package_missing: missing

Typing: state fields come from closed sets (a new value reports unknown, keeping the event, like reason). Counts must be non-negative integers, ready is a boolean, python_version is a version. platform/arch stay Desktop's own (a line can't set them).

New reasons: data_dir_locked, address_in_use, not_set_up, config_invalid.

Datadog: startup_failed, startup_stalled, health_check_failed, agent_error, document_host_degraded. Startup timing and the ready summary stay PostHog-only.

Cross-repo contract: fixtures/agent-startup-events.txt and agent-startup-step-ids.txt are byte-identical to cloud's services/agent/packaging/testdata/. STARTUP_STEPS is that list plus init (failure before the first step) and other.

comfyui_match=mismatch is the signal for two ComfyUIs: the agent was handed one install while the ComfyUI at its URL runs from another.

Change breakdown

Total changed lines (added + deleted): 319.

Category Files Added Deleted Share
Product code 2: src/main/lib/agentTap.ts, src/shared/datadogMirroredEvents.ts 102 6 33.9%
Test code 2: src/main/lib/agentTap.test.ts, src/shared/datadogMirroredEvents.test.ts 183 3 58.3%
Test fixtures 2: src/main/lib/fixtures/agent-startup-events.txt, agent-startup-step-ids.txt 25 0 7.8%

Testing

  • New agentTap startup records suite:
    • every fixture record is forwarded with typed fields
    • the step list matches the shared fixture
    • host lifecycle fields are typed
    • unknown state values become unknown
    • negative counts and bad versions drop the event
    • a line can't set platform/arch
  • The vocabulary tests are updated for the new events, fields and reasons. New mirror cases cover the agent failures; success events are not mirrored.
  • vitest run src/main/lib/agentTap.test.ts src/shared/datadogMirroredEvents.test.ts: 179 passed.
  • Full vitest run: 6105 passed. The same 24 files and 1 test fail on clean main on my machine, because Electron's binary didn't install locally. No new failures.
  • prettier --check and eslint pass on the changed files; typecheck:node passes.

Merge after, or together with, Comfy-Org/cloud#14456. Before that lands, nothing emits these names, so this change is inert.

Widen agentTap's lifecycle vocabulary for the startup records the
comfy-agent v1 host now writes: per-step outcome and time, stalls, startup
failures, a ready summary, crash and uptime on exit, orphaned agents and
ComfyUI instance mismatch. Every new field is typed: state values from a
closed set (unknown otherwise), non-negative counts, booleans and versions.
Mirror the agent failure events to Datadog.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds startup lifecycle telemetry, validation for its fields and values, startup fixtures and tests, a startup-specific rate limit, and Datadog mirroring for selected Local Agent failure events.

Changes: Agent telemetry lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Telemetry contracts and validation
src/main/lib/agentTap.ts, src/main/lib/agentTap.test.ts
Agent telemetry now accepts startup and host-state events. It defines startup steps and reasons, validates lifecycle enums and versions, converts readiness values to booleans, and rejects negative counts.
Startup rate limits and validation coverage
src/main/lib/agentTap.ts, src/main/lib/fixtures/agent-startup-events.txt, src/main/lib/fixtures/agent-startup-step-ids.txt, src/main/lib/agentTap.test.ts
startup_step events use a 240-per-hour cap. Fixtures cover startup outcomes, stalls, failures, Node.js events, and document-host degradation. Tests cover forwarding, typed fields, unknown enum fallback, invalid values, rate limits, and filtered platform fields.
Datadog mirroring rules
src/shared/datadogMirroredEvents.ts, src/shared/datadogMirroredEvents.test.ts
Five Local Agent failure or degradation events are added to the Datadog mirror allow-list. Startup timing and readiness events remain excluded.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 03be3

Consent or SDK rejection can exhaust the startup telemetry budget and suppress later records; admission accounting should be fixed before merging.

One Local Agent start writes a startup_step per step on each attempt, which
fills the 60-per-hour lifecycle cap in a single launch; a relaunch in the
same hour lost its records. startup_step now holds four launches an hour.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Count lifecycle records only after telemetry admission.

The lifecycle path increments its hourly bucket before telemetry.emit. emit discards the boolean result from captureEvent, so consent or SDK volume rejection still consumes the local budget. A later admitted record can then be suppressed for the rest of the hour. The budget is spent, but no record is sent.

Expose the admission result from emit and increment the bucket only when it returns true. This preserves Datadog mirroring.

node_fetch_failed (and package_missing) reach PostHog but aren't in this mirrored set. If a release breaks the pinned-Node download the start continues with co-editing off, so startup_failed/health_check_failed don't fire and document_host_degraded needs a doc-host that never started — so only PostHog would show it. Ops call: either mirror node_fetch_failed here, or add a one-line comment that it's deliberately PostHog-only so it reads as intentional.

outcome, comfyui and shell lack an 'other' value, unlike the other host-bucketed sets here (python_arch/crdt/cli/comfyui_found_by all include it). The host normalizes unknown values to other, so a host-sent other on these three lands as unknown — two spellings of "new value". Minor consistency fix: add 'other' to these three sets.

No exact-set test covers LIFECYCLE_ENUMS, and crash=none is never asserted. If 'none' were dropped from this set, every normal agent_exited (host sends crash=none) would silently report crash: unknown with every test still green — the most realistic regression risk here. Add an exact-set assertion (specifying the values independently as producer values), plus negatives for attempt/startup_ms and a ready=true case.
