cam sync crashes with RangeError: Invalid string length after remember/reindex #44

Open

Description

@orion08007-a11y

Summary

codex-auto-memory works after install/init, cam remember works, and cam memory reindex successfully builds retrieval sidecars.

However, cam sync --cwd /Users/orion/Documents/ballx-web crashes with:

RangeError: Invalid string length

Because of that, cam doctor --json keeps reporting:

layoutDiagnostics.index-drift
Canonical MEMORY.md no longer matches the topic Markdown files for project/active.

Environment

  • Version: 0.1.0
  • OS: macOS
  • Project cwd: /Users/orion/Documents/ballx-web

Repro

cam init
cam remember "This repository is ballx-web."
cam memory reindex --scope all --state all --cwd /Users/orion/Documents/ballx-web
cam sync --cwd /Users/orion/Documents/ballx-web

Actual

  • cam sync crashes with RangeError: Invalid string length
  • retrieval sidecars remain healthy
  • cam doctor --json keeps reporting index-drift

Expected

  • cam sync completes successfully
  • canonical MEMORY.md is reconciled
  • cam doctor --json no longer reports drift

#53 is merged into main and fixes a string-limit failure when reading large multiline rollouts. A later Linux check of init → remember → reindex → sync passed with synthetic data, but the cause of your macOS exception and the doctor index-drift report remains unconfirmed. If this still occurs on a build containing #53, please share the CAM, Node and Codex CLI versions and a redacted exception stack; session contents are not needed.
