Container Image

A container image is a static file with executable code that can create a container on a computing system.

A container image is immutable meaning it cannot be changed, and can be deployed consistently in any environment.

It is a core component of a containerized architecture.

What Are Docker Image Layers?

Each layer is an image itself, just one without a human-assigned tag. They have auto-generated IDs though.

Each instruction in a Dockerfile results in a layer.

All the layers created by a Dockerfile are read only they are immutable. This is needed, so they can be reused.
