If the main loop doesn't have dirty rectangles it doesn't update the displays; this means that the main loop doesn't take long enough, and then _wait_frame gets confused because of some kind of integer/rounding problem, and we don't delay for long enough, so we end up delaying for ~1ms and having two ticks very close together, instead of one
