I was wondering what happened with the proposal to add 16-bit support (see past issues 23 and 96). It seems some work was done after your comment "I don't mind merging 16-bit support. It would be very slow though without any asm optimizations", but I cannot find any info regarding what happened in the end. Is there still a possibility to add the 16-bit support?
