Well, i have a bunch of emulators in appimage format, so when I burn an emulation disc (single disc game or not) I put a .desktop file with a command to open ES-DE (that is an appimage too). And the ES-DE itself its configured to locate ROMs files on the mnt/cdrom directory.
Basically, when I insert the disc, ES-DE open directly on the game list and I can choose wich disc to launch (if is a single disc game i just select the only rom on the menu.)

It's pretty much what I have here with my setup. The difference is I'm using ES-DE for emulation games. It's the best solution even for multi disc games (i burn it all the discs into a single DVD and ES-DE list it all).
But I'm thinking in using both zaparoo and my script together. Zaparoo for single game disc and my script for the multi disc games.

What would need to happen for multi disc support to be at the same level you are expecting? I’m not really familiar myself
