Replacement for sphinx-hoverxref not working

We were using sphinx-hoverxref before upgrading to newer sphinx.
It is not compatible with sphinx 9 anymore since it was deprecated/decomissioned.

The replacement, the so called "Link preview" addon in the ReadTheDocs settings, does not work correctly with our pydata theme.

Two options:

• Restore sphinx-hoverxref extension with Sphinx 8.2.3 #492 Use sphinx 8 which is still new enough to be run on the newer ubuntu we needed for circumventing Docs are stuck on 3.3.0 #483
• wait for Link previews: class .tooltip collide with Bootstrap's tooltips readthedocs/addons#666 and Detect Sphinx PyData theme readthedocs/addons#667

I think I'll go with the first, if the RTD guys do not need it as a test case.
We can still do a PR and the temporary PR build on Josh's RTD account that he somehow managed to add to CI can be used as a test case.

Hi @jpfeuffer , I'm looking at the Sphinx compatibility issues in #494. I'd like to help test the restoration of the sphinx-hoverxref extension on a Sphinx 8.2.3 branch as you suggested. Should I prepare a PR for the version downgrade to see if it fixes the tooltip collisions?

Sorry but I just merged the downgrade PR. I tested it already in the rendered review website.
I'll keep this issue open in case we need to upgrade at some point and stumble across this error.
