Gallery does not sort and group photos by Date Taken correctly. It changes the photo order, but more recent and older photos are mixed. Photos are in an SD Card DCIM subfolder on an Moto G Play Android phone. Photos were moved from an internal storage DCIM subfolder "Camera" to an SD Card DCIM subfolder "Camera". This gave all the photos the same Last Modified date, but they retained their Date Taken dates. As discussed in another post, it took several reboots and slow scrolling down for Gallery to finally display all photos.
Update - I tried the suggestion in the FAQ to select photos and then click Fix Date Taken value and this seemed to fix the issue.
